Job Summary
The public health scientist position is responsible for conducting testing to isolate and identify pathogenic microorganisms and toxins deemed to be important by law enforcement and public health agencies for priority biological agents. This position performs microbiological, serological, and molecular testing of clinical and reference laboratory specimens, along with performing quality control, maintaining laboratory records, providing consultation to clients and other laboratorians, and performing preventative maintenance on equipment within the Mycobacteriology/LRN-B sections. This position will maintain the laboratory reagent and material stocks for testing conducted by the sections, as well as play a support role in the laboratory in the event of a disease outbreak.
Job Duties
Performs, specialized microbiological, serological and molecular biological testing procedures on clinical and reference samples submitted for laboratory analysis.
Performs quality control testing as required by regulations and maintains appropriate records.
Performs preventative maintenance of laboratory instrumentation.
Orders and reorders supplies for work unit as needed. On Call Duties.
Other duties as assigned as related to the position.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
Knowledge Of:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in related field with 2 years of work experience. Master's degree may substitute for one year of required lab experience. Professional certifications such as ASCP and ASM may substitute for one year of required laboratory experience.
Pre-Employment Requirements
Driver's License
Candidate must meet the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) minimum requirements for the performance of high complexity testing as defined in the CLIA regulation subpart 06171 493.1489(b)(2)(i).
If this position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job to conduct State business, then the following requirements apply: Driver’s License Requirements.
