Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Safety and Preparedness Specialist will complete work of considerable difficulty to ensure the hospital remains in compliance with various regulatory standards specific to Life Safety, Environment of Care, and Emergency Management. This includes regulations mandated by the NFPA, OSHA, CMS, state licensing, and The Joint Commission. Provides guidance and support to the Operations team (including the Hospital Safety Officer) by emphasizing and assisting with safety assessments such as physical environment safety assessments, job hazard analyses, ligature risk assessments, hazard vulnerability assessments, and other risk assessments as needed. This position conducts required evacuations and fire drills, and documents observations of unit and staff performance during the drills. This position aids in the development and execution of other required emergency exercises and drills. Completes After Action Reports and Plans of Corrections as needed. This position completes a crosswalk of the Hospital's Emergency Operation Plan (EOP) and regulatory standards on an annual basis, and assists with any needed changes to the EOP. Collaborate with Operations team to facilitate the monthly Environment of Care Committee.

Job Duties

− Survey hospital facilities, as part of the Environment of Care team, on a monthly basis to assess compliance with with OSHA, Joint Commission and state licensing standards. Assist with the coordination and facilitation of the monthly Environment of Care Committee. Develop plans of correction as necessary, and track and follow up on all deficiencies.

− Coordinate and document various safety exercises and real-life events to ensure compliance with Joint Commission emergency planning (EM) standards. Develop After Action Reports as necessary.

− Update hospital policies and procedures specific to life safety practices. Including the hospital's Joint Commission Management Plans, the Emergency Operations Plan, and the Continuity of Operation Plan

− Monitor contractor compliance with hospital safety expectations and provide guidance when necessary.

− Provide training to new employees during orientation, and provide on-the-job coaching to employees specific to safety issues.

− Other duties as assigned as related to the position (typically 5% - 10%)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge Of:

− OSHA, CMS, Joint Commission, State Licensing, NFPA and other regulatory standards as they relate to a health care environment.

− Performance Management (PM), and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and Lean methodologies.

Skill In

− Excellent documentation skills necessary to supply evidence of compliance with regulatory standards.

− Organization and Interpersonal relationships.

− Providing training and presentations to individuals and groups.

Ability To

− Maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of health care professionals and community groups.

− Develop, maintain and continuously document hospital plans and activities to ensure compliance with regulatory bodies.

− Communicate expectations to staff and provide justifications for specific safety standard adherence.

Selective Preference(s)

Bachelor's degree in a related safety and/or in a health field from an accredited college or university or three years of work-related industrial safety experience providing a broad industrial safety knowledge base including general industry, construction and agriculture and appropriate training courses and seminars specific to the field of industrial safety.

Pre-Employment Requirements

A State Hospital employee must be able to obtain a valid Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card pursuant to A.R.S.

Retirement

To help you build a financially secure future, the State makes monthly contributions to finance your retirement benefit. The State will make a contribution to the ASRS in an amount equal to your contribution. In other words, you and the State will each pay 50% of the total cost of the benefit. New State employees have a 27 week wait period for contributions to begin.
