Job Summary
This position acts as the administrator of the region's public affairs, media relations, and community liaison program, provides communications services during critical incidents, and acts as the regional ombudsman. Also assists the Regional Supervisor in a Regional Coordinator role and is the Regional Volunteer Coordinator.
Job Duties
The candidate will have knowledge of facilitating meetings; natural resources, wildlife, habitat and fisheries management; hunting; nuisance wildlife issues; outdoor recreation practices; North American Model of Conservation, and challenges; state and federal laws, rules and regulations; Federal Aid requirements; and computer operation. The candidate will be skilled in public speaking, oral interpretation and written communications; curriculum development and evaluation; customer service; community and public relationships; planning, coordination, organization and goal setting; budget development; time management and prioritization of multiple projects; problem solving and conflict management; planning and conducting public meetings and educational workshops; general outdoor skills; including operation of off-highway vehicles; safe handling of firearms and archery equipment; making decisions under pressure and with timelines. The candidate will have the ability to work effectively under minimal supervision; handle multiple tasks with frequently changing priorities; interact with the public; handle critical incidents and high stress situations; build and maintain effective professional relationships; evaluate conflicts and employ appropriate conflict resolution techniques; function effectively as a staff person and staff organization.
Selective Preference(s)
The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in wildlife or fisheries management, biology, education, communications, human dimensions, public administration, public affairs or a similar area. Two years of experience in these areas is a plus.
Pre-Employment Requirements
The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Employment is contingent on receipt of a level 1 fingerprint clearance card. Employment is also contingent upon completion of a post-offer medical/physical examination and the agency’s ability to reasonably accommodate any restrictions.
If this position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, then the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked or suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).

- Plan, write and work with internal/external subject matter experts to create accurate, timely and engaging talking points, news releases, media releases, articles, public service announcements, etc., to share with the public and key stakeholders.
- Build and maintain relationships with local communities (and media in those communities) through communication, outreach and public affairs efforts.
- Handle various aspects of media relations, including writing and distributing news releases and media advisories, making proactive pitches to news media, handling and coordinating agency responses to media queries, and assisting with critical incident communications.
- Build and maintain strong internal stakeholder relationships through ongoing collaboration with Department programs.
- Respond to media and public inquiries through social media.
- Develops and implements the regional community engagement program.
- Collaborate with the communities regarding wildlife conservation and recreation.
- Lead, assist and support the delivery of Department educational programs.
- May supervise regional volunteers.
- Provide information and communications to regional staff and constituents.
- Serve as the regional information and communication lead during critical incidents.
- Assist and advise the Regional Supervisor in developing regional implementation plans.
- Primary point of contact for regional public affairs issues related to the Department's Mission, law enforcement and nuisance wildlife; which includes coordinating with headquarters public affairs.
- Build relationships with local governments, media, educational institutions, and with local business organizations.
