Description of Duties: This position will advocate for conservation, enhancement, restoration, and management of wildlife habitat within the region. It will also advocate for recreational use of public and state lands and review proposed land and water development projects.
Major responsibilities include:
- Prepare written correspondence representing the official Department position with respect to impacts to wildlife and recreation from proposed plans and projects.
- Coordinate on project proposals and plans with land management agency staff.
- Provide expertise and negotiate with project proponents, consultants, and private sector professionals to achieve the best results for wildlife and recreation.
- Plan, implement and/or assist in habitat enhancement projects.
- Prepares agreements with federal and state partners to enable work across agencies.
- Interpret and evaluate the effects of proposed actions and alternatives on wildlife resources and recreation.
- Develops, maintains and fosters effective working relationships with cooperating agencies, project sponsors, and public entities as an advocate for wildlife conservation and wildlife oriented recreation.
- Create maps and use GIS in project evaluations.
- Maintains official records and files on project development, environmental references and Department correspondence.
- Monitors and evaluates changes in relevant laws, policies and regulations that affect the Department’s ability to manage wildlife and their habitats.
- Assists immediate Supervisor, Branch Supervisor and other Department personnel in the preparation of annual reports.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The candidate will have knowledge of/in: wildlife management; scientific data collection; ArcGIS Pro and ESRI mapping; and report writing techniques. The candidate will have skills in wildlife identification; verbal and written communication; and customer service. The candidate will have the ability to provide appropriate customer service within and outside the agency; manage budgets; use a radio system, GPS locator, computers, cameras, and specialized equipment common to wildlife work; use various modes of transportation, such as four-wheel drive, ATVs; apply basic survival and first-aid response assistance; work regular hours, including both office and field work, with occasional weekends and nights; develop and maintain working relationships with the public and various governmental and special interest groups; and work outdoors in extreme weather and/or isolated conditions.
The preferred candidate will have the ability to write complex documents. They will also have experience with property management, water rights, and writing/reviewing NEPA and other related documents. Knowledge of public/state land administration, fire ecology, fire management, rangeland ecology, land habitat management and enhancement.
The candidate will have a bachelor’s degree or higher in a wildlife science or closely related field.

training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked or suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
