What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Stage Manager position at Arizona Opera?

Arizona Opera seeks a highly motivated individual to join our team as Assistant Stage Manager for the 2025 Opera Season. This position reports to the Stage Manager and works closely with all department heads, department supervisors, cast, crew and staff.

Arizona Opera is one of the few opera companies in the United States that performs in more than one city and venue. Rehearsals, tech and the opening performance take place in Phoenix. Following the Phoenix performances, the production travels to Tucson, Arizona where it will receive its closing performance.

This position is responsible for the success of all rehearsals and show operations for the productions. Typical duties include creation of all the necessary and standard production paperwork, scheduling of rehearsals, communication with departments and liaising with the director and conductor to help fulfill the needs of the production. The ideal candidate should see themselves as a team player who is flexible, accommodating, with high standards for the production.

This position qualifies for paid sick leave as described in the employee handbook but is not eligible for medical or life insurance.

The ideal candidate will also aid in the selection of the Assistant Stage Management team.


Engagement:

La Bohème (fully-staged): in-person December 27, 2024 – February 1, 2025

  • Remote prep: as early-as December 16-20, 2024 (flexible time)
  • Prep: December 27-December 30, 2024
  • Rehearsals: December 31, 2024
  • Tech Time: January 17 – January 23, 2025
  • Performances: January 25 & 26 in Phoenix, February 1 in Tucson, 2025

Compensation:

  • La Bohème: $6,500
  • This position has traditionally been a ‘W-2’ full-time, term specific, salaried position paid semi-monthly as part of our regular employee pay structure. We are open to other terms of employment for the right candidate.

Accommodations & Travel:

  • Applicants may request housing in Phoenix. This may be provided as a hotel, airBnB or other long-stay rental.
  • Applicants will receive hotel accommodation while in Tucson.
  • Applicants may request a travel allowance for travel to-Phoenix and return home from Tucson. You may choose to spend it on airfare or ground transportation based on how you would prefer to travel.
  • Applicants will receive a travel allowance from Phoenix to Tucson.
  • Applicants will receive a per-diem allowance when in Tucson. No per diem will be provided in Phoenix. Per-diem rate is as-per current policy at Arizona Opera.
  • Parking is provided at all locations.

Qualifications

  • Completion of stage management specific training program.
  • The ability to read music is essential for this position.
  • Proficiency in operating Microsoft Suite, including Word and Excel is required.
  • Experience with SharePoint and Propared is beneficial.
  • Previous experience in stage management for opera productions are required, ideally 3 years worth of productions.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to multitask and work under pressure.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Detail-oriented and meticulous in maintaining accurate production paperwork.
  • Experience calling backstage.
  • Experience working with/coordinating/following Collective Agreement requirements for AFM, AGMA and IATSE.

Physical Demands:

  • Extended periods standing backstage or in a rehearsal room.
  • Communicating by telephone, video (zoom), email and in person.
  • Ability to perform duties in a rigorous schedule.
  • Climb stairs and carry 50 pounds.
  • Ability to see in dim-lighting.
