Salary Range : $130,000 - $160,000 per year; depends on experience

The Office of Government and Community Engagement at Arizona State University (ASU) seeks a highly motivated and experienced Director of Federal Relations based in Washington, D.C. Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Federal and State Relations, this position serves as the primary liaison between ASU and Capitol Hill. The Director is responsible for identifying opportunities for federal funding, monitoring legislative and executive actions impacting higher education and university research funding, and advancing ASU's federal policy agenda. This role involves enhancing ASU's outreach, networking with strategically significant organizations and individuals, and cultivating long-term relationships to support the university's federal initiatives.

Essential Duties :

  • Monitor, gather, and analyze data on national trends, issues, and political developments impacting higher education and research funding.
  • Draft and oversee the execution of ASU's federal policy agenda, proposing updates as necessary.
  • Provide strategic guidance to university leadership on federal priorities and initiatives.
  • Represent ASU's interests before the Executive and Legislative branches, advocating for federal policies that support the university's mission.
  • Regularly meet with congressional representatives, their staff, and policymakers to communicate and advance ASU's federal priorities.
  • Actively participate in key national organizations relevant to higher education, science, and research.
  • Enhance ASU's visibility and influence in Washington, D.C., by building and maintaining meaningful relationships with strategically significant stakeholders.
  • Facilitate ASU faculty appointments to federal, congressional, and national scientific boards, panels, and hearings.
  • Engage with Washington-based organizations influencing national policies, such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Council on Competitiveness.
  • Provide timely and relevant updates to the ASU community on federal activities, legislation, and policy developments.
  • Prepare and submit Federal Lobbying Reports in compliance with federal regulations.
  • Supervise and assign responsibilities to federal affairs staff, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities.
  • Travel as needed to Arizona and other locations to support meetings, events or convenings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support ASU's federal engagement efforts.

  • Ability to lead and manage a team effectively, delegating responsibilities as needed.
  • Experience in representing institutional interests in high-level advocacy settings.
  • Skilled in navigating and engaging with national organizations and coalitions.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills to prioritize multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Working Environment :

  • POSITION IS BASED IN Washington D.C.
  • May require a flexible working schedule in order to accommodate department need, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, standing, walking, and using a computer.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and / or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • May be required to perform tasks in the field within and / or across University campuses.
  • Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions.
  • Minimum Qualifications :

    Bachelor's degree and seven (7) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment / field including two (2) years managerial experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and / or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
