Professor of English
Arizona Western College seeks candidates with experience teaching composition in higher education for a Professor of English position. The successful candidate will teach transfer composition courses, participate in collaborative departmental activities, and support student advisement. This is an excellent opportunity to join faculty committed to fostering student learning and academic success in a multilingual, largely first-generation college student learning environment.
Typical Duties
- Teach 15 equated load hours per semester, including class preparation and grading of assignments and exams to evaluate student progress. Submit student grades and reports as required by College policies, while also maintaining a minimum of 5 office hours each week to provide academic support and guidance.
- Update course content and syllabi to align with the latest developments in the field. Collaborate with the Associate Dean and department colleagues on designing tools for assessing student learning outcomes, using methodologies and technology that enhance instruction.
- Collaborate with the Associate Dean and Director of Assessment to develop and implement a system for evaluating teaching effectiveness and student learning. Document evidence of student learning by completing annual course and program assessments in the institution’s assessment platform.
- Actively participate in student recruitment and retention initiatives alongside Student Services, engage in college committees, task forces, and club sponsorships, attend graduation ceremonies, and provide mentorship and guidance to adjunct and new faculty members.
- Engage in professional development opportunities outside the College, such as attending community events, participating in local/state advisory committees, joining relevant boards and clubs, and coordinating these activities with the Associate Dean.
- Work to facilitate student transfer pathways through articulation agreements, participate in annual AZ Transfer meetings, assist in developing 2 2 programs with partner universities, and review dual enrollment agreements with area high schools to support students' academic mobility.
- Support and participate in strategic initiatives and perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of a Master’s degree in English, with an emphasis in composition, or a relevant field with 18 graduate credit hours in the teaching discipline
- Experience teaching a full range of English courses (developmental, multilingual, multimodal, etc.)
- Demonstrated commitment to the philosophy and mission of a comprehensive community college

- Location may include an AWC campus, AWC designated site, or remote
- Exempt
- Instruction assignment dependent upon departmental and/or institutional needs
- Faculty may be asked to teach on various campuses, via in-person, online, hybrid, and virtual learning environments, as directed by the needs of the institution for a given semester
- Course scheduling may include daytime, evenings, and/or weekends
