PT - Assistant Instructor, Fire Science
Salary:
$16.16 per hour
Summary of Function:
Assist Instructors with lectures, skills, and administration for the Fire Programs.
Typical Duties:
- Serves Students. Assist the instructor in the daily operation of the program, including delivering lectures, project management, data entry, and assignment of reinforcement work for students.
- Set up and break down equipment for use during practical skills training. Teach skills in accordance with the educational standards and the course syllabi, through both lectures and practical hands-on education. Courses may include theory, practical application, skills training, or live scenarios.
- Participates in educational and recruitment activities of the Public Safety Institute.
- Support and participate in strategic initiatives and perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Certified Firefighter I & II
- One year of experience or have successfully completed Arizona Western College Fire Academy
- Certified and in good standing with National Registry or AZDHS as an EMT or Paramedic is preferred, but not required; documentation must be provided with application materials
Additional Eligibility Requirements:
- Arizona Driver’s License or Equivalent
- Successful candidate must successfully complete Arizona Fire Instructor I within two years of initial employment and submit certification

Position Type & Work Schedule:
- Part-time
- Up to 19 hours per week; assignment time dependent upon institutional need
- Instructional days and times are dependent upon semester course schedule and institutional need
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of and ability to interpret, apply, and follow college policies and procedures

Knowledge of and ability to effectively utilize instructional technologies and learning platforms including learning management system, classroom technology, Zoom, Firefighter training tools, and equipment

Skill and ability to prioritize and meet deadlines

Ability to complete all departmental and/or institutional mandatory training or development

Ability to communicate timely and effectively with students, colleagues, administrators, and the general public

Ability to teach and perform Firefighter I & II procedures

Ability to teach and perform Firefighter I & II skills

Ability to perform and demonstrate all course skill requirements i.e., tool hoisting

Ability to be self-directed

Ability to demonstrate integrity, professionalism, and civility in all job-related actions
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students and the public
Work Environment:

Inside classroom, lab, or office environment with normal noise and lighting levels

Indoor or Outdoor instructional, lab or training area, applicable to content area
- Must be able to perform duties, instruction and training in a variety of conditions including but not limited to dark environments, exposure to loud noises, high temperatures, and variable weather conditions.
Physical Demands:

Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer

Prolonged periods of standing and/or walking

May lift, carry, push, and/or pull, at times a minimum of 50 pounds

Stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and/or twist
- Must be able to navigate various departments of the organization's physical premises to support instructional or training needs.
Travel:
- Required to travel different locations to provide instruction, training, and/or hands-on skills

Yuma Public Safety Training Facility
City of San Luis Fire Department
Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department
Wellton Fire Department
Other locations as needed
