Description :
Day-to-day Responsibilities :
- Works under the direction of Supervisory Paralegal or Project Supervisor.
- Performs the following tasks while complying w / established procedures : compiles, prepares, & summarizes relevant materials for use by attorneys in discovery & in preparation of motions, briefs & other legal documents; summarizes depositions & other transcripts; maintains case files; performs simple legal research; indexes, tracks & controls document discovery (including documents produced & received in discovery); indexes, tracks & exhibits & other materials at depositions & at trial.
- Prepares exhibit cross-references.
- Assists attorneys in courtroom.
- Reviews documents for relevance & privilege according to established guidelines & criteria. Other examples of the types of work to be performed include compilation of documents for FOIA, production requests, Congressional inquiries, etc.
- Provide witness mgmt assistance prior to, during, & after trial. Typical assignments include working directly w / fact witnesses, providing assistance & support to ensure appearance for court, pre-trial conferences, & grand jury.
- Receive visitors, field phone calls, questions & other inquiries from fact witnesses seeking information pertaining to court, pre-trial conferences, grand jury appearances & expense reimbursement. Obtain pertinent information for files & documents necessary to arrange witness travel & reimbursements.
- Initiate contact / notify fact witnesses concerning travel arrangements, appearance date / time, & determine any special circumstances or needs of the fact witness. Use judgment to determine when department should be notified of special circumstances or needs of fact witnesses.
- Confer with the department concerning fact witness appearance & special circumstances regarding witnesses (special authorizations, international witnesses, military / federal employee witnesses, or hostile witnesses). Complete & submit proper documentation for special authorizations & obtain prior approval before proceeding w / travel arrangements.
- Prior to fact witness' appearance, ensure all travel documents & appearance date & time have been provided to witness. Make necessary arrangements for fact witness travel & lodging according to policies & procedures.
- Prepare & submit documentation for fact witness reimbursement, i.e. witness vouchers & other required documentation for fact witnesses. Furnish requested information concerning pending & completed fact witness vouchers. Gather required documentation & reconcile Government Travel Accounts.
- Obtain information, confer, & coordinate w / the investigative agencies, & other counterparts, when necessary.
- Complete variable aspects of recurring documents in conformance w / the rules governing their style & format. Compose letters from templates that do not require legal interpretations but require a good working knowledge of legal procedures & specialized terminology relevant to fact witness laws & regulations.
- Perform general office procedures pertaining to fact witness mgmt, including, but not limited to : establish & maintain a variety of fact witness files, documents & databases; assemble documents & other information for fact witness file material & retention in accordance w / established procedures & regulations; if requested, establish & maintain calendar & / or database of active & pending fact witness appearances; track hearings, trial dates, grand jury & scheduling conferences; perform other administrative & logistical fact witness mgmt related duties as required / assigned.
