The Arkansas Archeological Survey (AAS) is a unit of the University of Arkansas System. Our mission is to study and protect archeological sites in Arkansas, to preserve and manage information and collections from those sites, and to communicate what we learn to the people of Arkansas. Cooperative agreements with seven state university campuses, two state parks, and the UA System's Winthrop Rockefeller Institute enable scholars at ten research stations around the state to carry out this mission. Summary of Job Duties :
The Arkansas Archeological Survey is accepting applications for an Archeological Assistant, a full-time, benefits eligible position located at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, less than 45 miles from Little Rock, Arkansas. Duties the Archaeological Assistant include : fieldwork (some requiring in-state travel), collections processing and data analysis, record keeping, supervising volunteers in the laboratory and the field, Research Station upkeep, and interaction with visitors and callers to the Station, all under the direction of the Research Station Archeologist. Opportunities exist for conducting independent research projects as appropriate.
Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
Qualifications :
Minimum Qualifications :
A Bachelor’s degree in anthropology or a related field from an accredited institution of higher education
Archeological field experience in North America, east of the Rocky Mountains
Archeological lab experience (material analysis)
Experience in archeological curation and data management
Preferred Qualifications :
M.A. / M.S. in Anthropology / Archeology from an accredited institution of higher education
Experience with the use of total station for mapping, and proficiency in using ArcGIS software
Experience with the archeology of Southeastern North America
Experience working with and writing for the public
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (KSAs) :
Knowledge of the general practice of North American archeology
Knowledge of historic period archeology
Knowledge of basic computer applications (MS Office, Excel, etc.) and field electronics (Total Stations, GRP, etc.)
Skill in basic archeological field and lab procedures
Ability to work with other staff, avocational archeologists, and the general public
Ability to work independently and meet internal deadlines
