Description

Responsible for assisting with planning, organizing, directing, executing and evaluating all aspects of the pharmacy services for the hospital. Under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, interprets and processes physicians orders, provides drug information, performs continuous quality improvement activities, participates in discharge planning and performs non-distributive services, such as drug-level monitoring, as established by policy.

Work Schedule

Flexible schedule to cover all shifts and weekend activities with on-call participation.

Primary Duties

  • Exercises appropriate clinical judgment in reviewing and evaluating patients drug therapy. Collaborates with medical and nursing staff to provide quality patient care.
  • Reviews, compounds and accurately dispenses pharmaceuticals and IV admixtures from a direct copy of the physicians original medication order.
  • Prepares, maintains, updates and monitors each patients medication profile as required. Charges and credits medication to patients.
  • Checks the work of supportive personnel and other pharmacy personnel for accuracy, proper labeling and adherence to pharmacy policy and procedure.
  • Dispenses and maintains appropriate records for all controlled substance medications and other medications in conformance with federal and state laws.
  • Oversees medication supplies, storage and utilization on assigned nursing units.
  • Addresses any issues or problems in a professional and ethical manner.
  • Assists the medical and nursing staff on all problems pertaining to medication orders or pharmacy policy and procedures. Promotes a positive and cooperative attitude in dealing with nurses, medical and other personnel, and with the public.
  • Maintains professional knowledge by attending continuing education programs, reading professional and technical journals and participating in pharmacy-conducted in-service lectures.
  • Maintains a neat, clean and orderly department.

  • Delegates appropriately to non-licensed staff in keeping with job descriptions, licenses requirements and standards of practice.

  • Assists in interdepartmental service coordination.
  • Actively participates in the Performance Improvement and Utilization Review programs.
  • Assumes a leadership role in the maintenance of the patient-focused care delivery system.
  • Assists in directing and guiding staff in the coordination of unit operations.
  • Assists in all aspects of care if the environment, such as dietary, housekeeping, infection control and supply and equipment management.
  • Attends 80% of in-services and departmental meetings.
  • Helps provide staff to other areas of the hospital when needed.

Qualifications


  • Education: Must be currently enrolled in didactic portion of classes at an accredited College of Pharmacy, with an expected graduation date within four years and a minimum degree of either Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or PharmD.
  • Licensure / Certification: Must be actively licensed as a pharmacy intern issued by the State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Experience: None required.
  • Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Performs at a proficient level, all tasks within the specialty area. Able to operate all appropriate clinical equipment in a safe and appropriate manner. Able to perform the necessary functions on the facilitys computer system.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Must be able to interact and communicate with all levels of staff, physicians, patients, and families in an effective manner, exhibiting tact, enthusiasm and patience. Must be able to be sensitive to cultural and bilingual issues.
  • Essential Physical Requirements: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Able to stand and walk for long periods of time. Able to carry equipment and supplies of 25 pounds or more. Working under stressful conditions and irregular hours, exposure to communicable diseases and potentially contaminated body fluids and bio-hazardous materials.
  • Essential Cognitive Abilities: Requires good communication and organizational skills. Requires reasoning ability and good independent judgment. Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours. Requires working with frequent interruptions. Able to comprehend and interpret complex clinical subject matter related to specialty. Able to perform necessary mathematical calculations for drug administration and to write clinical information at a college level.
  • Essential Sensory Requirements: Requires corrected hearing and vision within a normal range and ability to distinguish color.
  • Exposure to Hazards: Requires exposure to communicable diseases and potentially contaminated body fluids and hazardous materials. OSHA risk factor: Category I. Possible risk of physical injury due to moving machinery and supplies.
  • Other: Understands the mission and vision of the hospital. Operates within the concept of patient focused care. Evolves into an effective team member. Must adhere to dress code; good grooming and personal hygiene habits; and strict adherence to attendance policies. Maintains knowledge of and conforms to hospital policies and procedures. Employee must maintain satisfactory level of knowledge and skill in Age Specific Competencies for the appropriate patient population.
