Arlington County Government’s Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is seeking an intern to assist with special event management and coordination as well as managing public relations surrounding the events. This position offers the opportunity to prepare for a career in special event management, communications, digital marketing and more. The Intern will learn about the daily operations of County-wide special events including providing support for the Arlington County Fair, one of the largest free events on the east coast with over 160,000 people in attendance.

We are seeking highly motivated individuals for exciting one-year Internships in a variety of positions across the County. These positions offer a career opportunity to qualified individuals with little or no previous professional work experience to help them prepare for a career in a variety of fields of work. This Internship will provide recent college graduates and currently enrolled graduate students with in-depth, hands-on learning opportunities in areas critical to supporting local government initiatives while participating in a developmental and training cohort with peers.
Internship
Over the course of about 3 months, Interns work under the mentorship and supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. They support the County's efforts to consistently work toward greater efficiency and effectiveness by offering improved processes and fresh ideas, and by leveraging smart technologies, while becoming familiar with the public-sector work environment as a viable and fulfilling career path.

QUALIFICATIONS
Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Driver’s License: The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
TB: You must provide evidence of negative TB test results or submit to a TB screening.
Additional Information
Work Hours: This is a full-time position (40 hrs/week) Monday through Friday, between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. Must be capable of working occasional night and weekend hours as necessary. This is not a fully remote opportunity.

Responsibilities

- Working with the Special Events Coordinator and Communications Manager to develop event strategies, goals, and desired outcomes;
- Providing communication to County Fair vendors, including venues, transportation, audio/visual, entertainment and other key stakeholders;
- Assisting with the management of special event project budgets, conducting research projects to gain market insight and manage daily and long-term projects;
- Supporting outreach and communications efforts for the event through graphic design, writing, social media, newsletters, in-person outreach and more;
- Managing the fair’s event supplies, photo library and physical/electronic resources;
- Providing on-site support during events and attending necessary department meetings and training sessions;
- Researching and streamlining potential business opportunities;
- Supporting other DPR events as necessary; and
- Performing other duties as assigned.

- We anticipate this position lasting between May 18 through August 22, 2025 depending on the needs of the assigned department and opportunities for slight adjustments as necessary.
- This is not a fully remote opportunity, in-office hours are to be expected.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Completion of at least 2 years or 60 semester hours in a Bachelor’s degree program; and
- Candidates must have little to no professional experience (less than 1 year) of experience in the internship field.

- G.P.A. of 3.0 or above is preferred and applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts;
