What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant County Attorney III position at Arlington County, VA?

The appointee to this senior level position will provide legal services in a wide variety of local government law areas. This position will primarily support the Department of Human Services, with a focus on child protective services and litigation regarding the same. Duties will include matters as may be assigned. The position is expected to function with limited supervision and requires comprehensive, in-depth knowledge of general and local government related Virginia law, and federal laws and regulations, including their relationship to the authority and functions of county government.
Specific duties include:
- Serving as first chair in litigation before various administrative bodies as well as in state and federal court proceedings;
- Reviewing and preparing agreements, contracts, ordinances, resolutions, and other legal documents, as well as preparing opinions for and rendering legal advice to the County Board, the County Manager, County departments and staff, and County boards and commissions;
- Organizing, interpreting and applying difficult legal principles;
- Analyzing and addressing complex legal problems using sound professional judgment, as well as excellent research and writing skills; and
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with public officials, staff, and the general public.
Minimum:
Desirable: Preference will be given to applicants with the following:
· Previous employment with a Virginia city or county government; and/or
· Significant experience with, but not limited to, juvenile and domestic relations law and child protective services.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Telework: Opportunities for telework are available. However, this is not a full-time remote position, and the attorney filling this position is expected to be able to attend court, in-person meetings, and briefings in Arlington County as needed.
The official titles for this position are Assistant County Attorney II and III.
Please Note: The position grade and salary to be commensurate with experience.
The salary range for a County Attorney III is $129,001.60 - $199,950.40 Annually.
The salary range for a County Attorney II is $106,100.80 - $164,465.60 Annually
