What are the responsibilities and job description for the Business Tax Section Coordinator position at Arlington County, VA?
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
The Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue is seeking a Business Tax Section Coordinator to supervise a team of Business Inspectors in the Arlington County Commissioner of Revenue’s Office. This position is responsible for developing the field inspection work plan, providing guidance on complex tax issues, and responding to taxpayer inquiries and concerns. In addition, the employee will oversee training plans for new staff, manage system upgrades and work with the audit team on special cases.
Specific duties include:
- Providing team leadership, mentoring, and technical direction to Business Tax Inspectors;
- Assisting in the development of the Business Tax field inspection work plan, delegating and prioritizing work assignments;
- Organizing and prioritizing the business tax inspector’s workflow by outlining objectives and resources available;
- Providing technical guidance and assistance in the resolution of complex tax related issues and problems;
- Researching and responding to taxpayers inquiries and concerns;
- Preparing draft memorandums and reports detailing business tax assessments information and statistics;
- Reviewing and approving tax reliefs and refunds submitted by staff;
- Maintaining the automated data records system which monitors business tax assessments;
- Training new staff in office procedures, and state and local code regulations;
- Corresponding with external parties and provides reports to Department of Management & Finance (DMF), Arlington Economic Development (AED), Virginia Department of Taxation (VA Tax), Arlington Chamber of Commerce, Virginia Department of Social Services, and other jurisdictions; and Other job-related duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will have the following:
- Knowledge about codes, laws, regulations and policies and must research to stay current on any legislative updates or initiatives;
- Supervisory experience to lead a team to achieve business objectives and goals;
- Experience conducting tax investigations/auditing in either a private, public or governmental environment; and
- Technical experience in the areas of business tax inspection, tax auditing or assessment or account monitoring and reconciliation in a related field.
Minimum:
- Some college in accounting, tax law, business operations, and auditing from an accredited institution; and Significant and progressively responsible experience in Business Tax Inspection.

Substitution: Additional education may be substituted for experience. Additional experience may be substituted for education.
Desirable: Preference will be given to applicants with one or more of the following:
- Experience with business license, business tangible property and custodial taxes;
- Experience with federal, state and local business tax regulations;
- Experience with legal business structures and federal government contracts;
- Experience using Microsoft Excel; and/or Interpersonal skills to explain rules and procedures clearly as well as to persuade and coordinate the work of others instruction.

Additional Information
Work H ours: Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with telework opportunities available upon supervisor approval.
Work Type: The Arlington Commissioner of Revenue offers a hybrid work environment and generally permits employees to work in part, remotely. The individual in this position should be prepared to initially spend most of their work hours on-site at the Commissioner’s office in Arlington and would be eligible for hybrid work in the future as appropriate
