Arlington County's Department of Environmental Services (DES) Auto Equipment Bureau is seeking a motivated Heavy Truck Supervisor to supervise staff who perform repairs, preventive maintenance and vehicle safety inspections on all County vehicles, with an emphasis on Truck maintenance and repairs.
Specific duties include:
- Assigning, supervising, performing, and inspecting preventive maintenance and repairs on diesel, gasoline and battery powered vehicles of multiple types;
- Monitoring program costs and making recommendations on the feasibility of major repairs or replacement of equipment from a budget perspective, including assisting in the preparation of budget documents;
- Inspecting work in progress to ensure conformity with County, State and Federal standards;
- Enforcing safety rules and other accident prevention measures and ensuring that staff have the necessary tools, equipment and supplies to complete work assignments;
- Completing employee performance evaluations and ensuring that staff receive the appropriate training necessary to perform job duties according to industry standards; and
- Preparing work orders, program projections and reports using an automated work order and vehicle maintenance reporting system and Microsoft Office applications.
The ideal candidate will be an excellent communicator and problem solver with management experience in heavy equipment operations.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Minimum :
- High school diploma/equivalent; and
- Three years of auto mechanic repair that includes responsibility for providing leadership to other trades workers and/or managing trades projects.
Desirable : Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
- Heavy equipment operations management;
- Utilizing an automated vehicle maintenance reporting system; and/or
- Completion of courses in auto mechanics or shop practices.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- The applicant must possess or obtain within six (6) months of appointment a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- The applicant must possess or obtain a Safety Inspector's License within the first twelve (12) months of employment.
- The applicant must possess a valid driver's license and authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record and passing a pre-employment drug screening as required by applicable standards and required background check.
- Applicants must provide written consent for Arlington County to obtain from their previous employer's information required by Department of Transportation (DOT) agency regulations concerning drug and alcohol testing information. Prior to the time of appointment, the successful applicant must pass a pre-employment drug screening. The successful applicant will be subject to drug screening, at such times during employment, as required by federal, state and local standards and policies.
- Ability to work in an environment that includes exposure to noise, odors, dust, grease and dirt with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching and lifting light to very heavy objects and equipment. Must be able to lift heavy objects weighing 25-50 pounds unilaterally; carry 75-100 pounds bilaterally and push/pull 50-75 pounds unassisted.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Work Hours : Monday - Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., subject to change based on the needs of the Bureau. Seasonal overtime and availability for call-back in emergencies is required. This position is designated as an emergency employee.
Note : Anyone hired without the VA State Certified Safety Inspector License, or the Commercial Driver's License, will be appointed as a Trainee and must obtain the permit/license within the specified time frame. Once obtained, the CDL and VA State Certified Safety Inspector Licenses must be kept in good standing for continued employment.
