What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard I (Temporary) position at Arlington County, VA?

The Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) is hiring multiple temporary Lifeguards for the Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center to work shifts as primary guards in the facility and monitor two bodies of water, including a 50-meter pool and a leisure pool with a water slide and other play features. Lifeguards will work on deck or in lifeguard chairs and serve as the primary protection against water related injuries.
Specific duties include:
- Performing hourly chemical checks, managing swimming pool supplies and equipment, and performing minor pool maintenance;
- Ensuring the safety of all patrons and the safe operation of the facility;
- Ensuring compliance with County policies and procedures and health and safety standards; and
- Performing other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum:
- American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire; and
- CPR, First Aid/AED certifications or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
Desirable: Preference may be given to applicants with experience/credentials in one or more of the following:
- Working as a lifeguard in a recreational or competitive pool setting;
- Knowledge of lifeguarding and best practices related to pool safety;
- Working with a large and diverse staff;
- Performing hourly chemical checks, managing swimming pool supplies, and equipment; and/or Possession of CPR/AED Certification, Lifeguarding for the Professional Rescuer Certification, and/or American Red Cross Water Attraction Credential for Lifeguards.
Special Requirements
Certification Requirements: Staff will be required to obtain within 30 days of employment and maintain the following certifications:
- CPR/AED; and
- American Red Cross Lifeguard.
Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information. A pre-hire federal background check and State of Virginia Central Registry check will also be completed before hire.
Additional Information
Work Hours: Up to 10 - 40 hours a week. Schedule varies based on the facilities schedule of events. Must be able to work flexible hours. The position may be required to work morning, afternoon, nights, or weekend shifts.
