The Commonwealth's Attorney Office is committed to transformative justice in the promotion of effective victim services, evidence-based diversion programs, and racial justice. Working in a major metropolitan area's prosecutor's office offers an attorney a broad spectrum of experience and provides ample opportunities for collaboration, discussion, and comradery. The crimes prosecuted range from DUI to aggravated assaults, complex fraud investigations, rapes, and murders. The Office is responsible for both adult and juvenile prosecutions.

The Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney for Arlington County and the City of Falls Church is seeking three Paralegals to provide court administration and documentation assistance to the professional legal staff. These positions will manage court dockets that are prosecuted in the General District and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts for Arlington County and the City of Falls Church.


Specific duties include:

  • Performing administrative functions including preparing court dockets, composing letters and narrative reports, and compiling information relevant to cases;
  • Using police department's database to obtain and review police reports to assist with preparing cases for trial;
  • Issuing subpoenas for all necessary witnesses;
  • Requesting lab reports and prior criminal convictions;
  • Uploading digital evidence including body worn camera (BWC) video using Axon's evidence.com software;
  • Tracking cases using the Client Information Management System (CIMS), and Prosecutor by Karpel (PBK) Case Management System; and
  • Serving as a liaison between the courts and law enforcement agencies for Arlington County and/or the City of Falls Church.

The ideal candidates will possess the following:

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and time management skills to carry out their assigned tasks in a timely and complete manner; and
  • Exceptional communication and customer service skills to work with a diverse population.

Work is performed under supervision of the County Attorney or designee.


Selection Criteria

Notice: This position will be filled either at the Paralegal I level or Paralegal II level depending upon the needs of the organization and qualifications of the applicant.

Minimum qualifications for Paralegal I:


  • High school diploma or GED; and
  • Some experience as a paralegal, legal assistant or legal secretary.

Minimum qualifications for Paralegal II:

  • High school diploma or GED; and
  • Considerable paralegal or law office management experience or experience in a closely related field.


Licenses/Certifications for both Paralegal I & II: Completion of a paralegal program recognized by the American Bar Association.

Substitution for both Paralegal I & II: Additional qualifying experience in a legal office performing paralegal responsibilities may be substituted for the paralegal certificate program requirements.

Desirables for both Paralegal I & II: Preference may be given to candidates who have the following experience:


  • Working in a criminal justice or court system environment;
  • Docket management;
  • Prosecutor by Karpel (PBK) or similar case management software;
  • Using Axon Evidence.com software for uploading body worn camera (BWC) video; and/or
  • Microsoft Office Word and Outlook.

Work Hours: Core work hours are Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.


The salary scale for Paralegal I is from $61,942.40 to $96,033.60 Annually.
