RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS (May not include all duties performed; not all incumbents perform all essential functions delineated)
Confers with Supervisor to learn nature of work assignments, and to advise or consult on crew assignments, equipment to be used, and materials to be obtained or purchased. Utilizes computerized system to order materials and equipment and maintains stock on service trucks.
Performs a variety of skilled electrical duties on the interior and exterior of school buildings and facilities, including single and multi-phase work on electrical systems and associated equipment; conducts regular inspections of facilities and performs preventative maintenance.
Trouble-shoots, tests, and locates problems; repairs or replaces electrical components and equipment including electrical motors, motor controls, blowers, pumps, indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures, control panels, main and distribution circuit breakers, lighting and power distribution panel boards, and surge protectors.
Maintains and modifies existing electrical service lines; installs new electrical conduit and wiring; determines the type, size, location, routing and design of conduit and wiring.
Uses hand, measuring, and power tools and equipment and a variety of testing and tracing meters to install, test, or replace lighting, power or other electrical systems, fixtures, plugs, lights, wires, and equipment.
Programs and re-programs bell schedules and master clock systems.
Climbs onto roof or up walls to mount security lighting fixture, lights and wiring, and other electrical equipment, using ladders, scaffolds, or power lifts.
Tests and repairs kitchen equipment, such as ovens and food warmer.
Performs periodic preventative maintenance to ensure system remains fully operational.
Maintains records on work of crew and contractors, problems or systems changes.
Performs routine maintenance and repair on tools, equipment and vehicles.
As assigned, leads and inspects work performed by crew, summer student workers and / or community service workers. Provides guidance and training as necessary.
Ensures all safety precautions, regulations and equipment are utilized appropriately, and that work complies with county building codes.
Loads, unloads supplies and equipment to automotive vehicle, and operates vehicle to / from work site.
Participates in set up and clean up of work-site to ensure safe environment.
Performs related work as required, or assigned.
EXPERIENCE :
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Electrician I :
Good knowledge and ability to operate a broad range of hand, power, and testing tools and equipment associated with electrical systems maintenance and specific to lighting, power, clock, or other specialized electrical systems.
Good knowledge of the common procedures, materials, hazards and safety precautions associated with electrical systems installation, testing and operation.
Good knowledge of building, electrical and fire codes relating to commercial electrical work, including the National Electrical Code.
Good knowledge of national, state and local codes and regulations relevant to all involved electrical systems and equipment.
Ability to perform tasks at the apprentice, pre-journey level.
Electrician II :
Thorough knowledge and ability to operate a broad range of hand, power, and testing tools and equipment associated with electrical systems maintenance and specific to lighting, power, clock, or other specialized electrical systems.
Thorough knowledge of the common procedures, materials, hazards and safety precautions associated with electrical systems installation, testing and operation.
Thorough knowledge of building, electrical and fire codes relating to commercial electrical work, including the National Electrical Code.
Thorough knowledge of national, state and local codes and regulations relevant to all involved electrical systems and equipment.
Ability to perform work of the trade at the full journey level, and to assign, observe, monitor, train, and lead subordinate trades staff
Both Levels :
Ability to follow and give oral and written instructions, and to read and interpret plans, diagrams, drawings, prints, schematics, etc.
Ability to use arithmetic computations to measure, calculate distances, electrical power needs, and costs, etc, and ability to maintain records.
Ability to develop and maintain good interpersonal relationships
QUALIFICATIONS :
Electrician I : Graduation from high school (or GED), including some courses in industrial arts and / or shop mechanics, and a combination of education / training equivalent to an electrician apprenticeship and some work experience in electrical wiring, lighting or other systems installation, testing and operations as trainee or helper.
Electrician II : Graduation from high school (or GED), including some courses in industrial arts and / or shop mechanics, and a combination of education / training equivalent to an electrician apprenticeship and considerable maintenance electrical work experience, some of which shall have been at the level of electrician I.
LICENSE / CERTIFICATION
Possession of an appropriate, valid vehicle operator's license,
Level II- State journey level electrician’s license.
NOTE : All APS employees authorized to drive APS vehicles are subject to either the Omnibus Transportation Act drug or alcohol testing procedures (if required to possess a CDL) or the Arlington Public Schools Alcohol and Drug testing procedures (if CDL is not required).
PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES
Work requires sufficient strength, agility, dexterity, and hand-eye-foot coordination to perform all essential functions, including operating and using all tools and equipment, lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, reaching in front of body and overhead while holding objects weighing up to 50 pounds, walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time, climbing and working from ladders, scaffolds, and lifts up to 40 feet high.
HAZARDS / UNUSUAL DEMANDS
Work is performed both inside and outside school district building and facilities, and often requires working unusual hours or evening shifts. Employee is exposed to a wide range of climatic conditions, dust, flammable or toxic chemicals, loud noise and vibrations. Employee is also exposed to potential electrical shock and other physical hazards when working on and around high voltage, operating tools and equipment and working in high places or cramped spaces. Work requires vision necessary to determine color differences. Employee is required to wear and use safety clothing and equipment and to comply with safety policies and procedures. The work schedule is subject to change, depending upon the needs of APS. Incumbents in this class are hired for the position, not the work schedule or shift assignment. Once hired, an employee may be reassigned to another schedule or shift at the discretion of APS.
