Visual Arts Teacher

POSITION GOALS: We are looking for an innovative arts educator who can inspire students to become life-long learners and creative risk-takers, and provide students with the technical skills and Studio Habits of Mind they need to realize their own creative vision.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree preferred

Massachusetts Licensure for Secondary Art Education required

Previous successful experience teaching students in a multicultural setting is preferred

Performance Responsibilities

  • Teach middle school visual arts courses. These will include some combination of general studio arts courses that include sculpture, painting, printmaking, etc., as well as electives such as ceramics and/or digital art.
  • Employ instructional methods that both teach discrete skills and promote the development of Studio Habits of Mind such as Envisioning, Expression, Risk Taking and Collaboration.
  • Demonstrate artistic skill in a wide variety of media, including drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics and digital art.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.
  • Ensure that instructional practices and classroom support meet the diverse needs of students with IEPs and 504 plans, in collaboration with special education staff and related service providers.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and compassion, while maintaining high expectations for student achievement
  • Demonstrate strong classroom management skills
  • Collaborate with school faculty to develop interdisciplinary curricula
  • Stay abreast of trends in the contemporary visual arts world and work to connect students to the local arts community
  • Organize and participate in exhibitions of student work on and off campus
  • Contribute to departmental and school-wide curriculum projects and other initiatives
  • Meet professional obligations concerning collaboration with peers, punctuality, attendance, organization, and routine duties

TERMS OF

EMPLOYMENT: Arlington Education Association Bargaining Unit Position

REPORTS TO: K-12 Visual Arts Director (primary) and building principal

EVALUATION: The performance of this job will be evaluated as per the Arlington Education Association Contract. The K-12 Visual Arts Director will complete evaluations with support from the building principal.

Arlington has a well established new teacher induction program with mentoring throughout the school year.

Salary and Benefits are consistent with the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Arlington School Committee and the Arlington Education Association.

The Salary Schedule is on our website. Salary placement is based on Education and Experience.
