Primary Position Objectives

The UWC-USA program - a two-year experience that integrates our Academic, Co-curricular, and Residential programs - prepares students to serve as catalysts for greater unity, peace and sustainability in the world. We support students in the practice of our mission during their two years on campus and challenge them to live our mission for a lifetime.

The Director of Co-curricular Learning contributes to the school's mission across the full program. The Director leads the development and implementation of the Querencia and Basecamp curricula, ensuring that they integrate our commitments to place-based education, peacebuilding and integral sustainability. Together with the Dean of Teaching & Learning and Associate Head of School, the Director of Co-curricular Learning will ensure the coherence of student experience across the Querencia and Basecamp programs.

Responsibilities include being knowledgeable about the role of IB CAS in the Diploma Programme, as well as the relationship between CAS and UWC's deep commitment to place-based, experiential, and mission-aligned learning. Additionally, the Director supports and guides the CAS Coordinator (Community Engagement Manager) to ensure the implementation of CAS experiences, supervising directly CAS leaders, CAS supervisors, students and staff; oversees CAS data management and integration; reports the progress of students to the Dean of Teaching and Learning and IB Diploma Program (IBDP) Coordinator; assesses student fulfillment of the CAS learning outcomes; and ensures that UWC-USA meets reporting requirements as required by the IBDP. Beyond the co-curricular program, the Director supports other programming areas in formal or informal ways. They fulfill their responsibilities in accord with the UWC mission and values as well as the school's strategic plan, foundational documents, IBDP authorization, ISAS accreditation, best practices in experiential education, and best practices in teaching and learning.

The Director of Co-curricular Learning is employed on a 10-month agreement that runs from 1 August to 31 May and is paid over the course of 12 months. Their summer and winter holiday travel plans should not interfere with their professional obligations at the beginning of August, mid December, early January, and late May.

Position Responsibilities

IB teaching

  • Teach one code of an IB subject, determined by the academic area of expertise, including all responsibilities indicated with the teaching of the subject (group meetings, expeditionary learning, etc.)

Program Leadership

  • Leads the Co-curricular team in the development, implementation and advancement of the co-curricular curriculum
  • Supervises all faculty sponsors of Querencia and Basecamp, and all Expeditionary Learning activities (biweekly expeditions, Project Week & Southwest Studies)
  • Promotes reflective practice for Querencia and Basecamp leaders, sponsors and students by consistently modeling reflection habits and skill in their managerial role
  • Familiarize students, colleagues, parents and the wider community with the co-curricular program and its importance in the curriculum
  • Promotes and publicizes student achievements in the co-curricular program
  • Informs and works with outside providers in their involvement in co-curricular experiences
  • Organizes professional development for Querencia and Basecamp leaders and sponsors
  • Program Administration

  • Supervises the Community Engagement Manager & Basecamp Coordinator to coordinate the Querencia and Basecamp schedules and logistics in conjunction with leaders, including transportation, room reservations and supplies / equipment
  • Designs and administers the Querencia and Basecamp registration process for students
  • Coordinates attendance tracking among Querencia and Basecamp leaders and sponsors
  • Coordinates the student Querencia and Basecamp interviews among leaders and student advisors.
  • Supports documentation as needed related to IB CAS portfolios, reporting, and program costs / contracts and invoices
  • Reports completion / non-completion of CAS to the IB on IBIS.
  • Helps coordinate and ensure continuity of program evaluation
  • Identifies safety issues (risk assessment and child protection)
  • Develops and maintain the co-curricular handbook, including policy statements and resources
  • Collaborates with the Dean of Teaching and Learning and Registrar to supervise narrative reporting for Querencia and Basecamp
  • Manages the co-curricular budget
  • Maintains co-curricular records and reports
  • Program Integration

  • Supports the Dean of Teaching and Learning in their effort to further integrate UWC CAS with other elements of the IB curriculum
  • Supports faculty's leadership of biweekly learning expeditions as needed, including driving for two winter learning expeditions
  • Supervises with the co-curricular team to integrate Querencia and Basecamp Teams as weekly loci of experiential education on campus
  • Supervises the Community Engagement Manager to deliver the IB CAS Portfolio
  • Student Supervision

  • Educates students on all aspects of the CAS programme, including the meaning and purpose of the CAS learning outcomes
  • Provide ongoing guidance and support to students, including feedback on student reflections, assistance with goal setting and monitoring student progress
  • Assigns and monitors student leaderships or CAS projects as needed
  • Sponsors CAS activities and leads expeditionary outings
  • Participates in CAS student interviews
  • Periodically review students' CAS portfolios
  • Writes periodic student reports as part of the school's formal evaluation process
  • Reviews proposals for new CAS activities
  • UWC-USA Leadership

  • Serve as an Advisor
  • Lead one Basecamp or Querencia activity
  • Generally, fulfill all responsibilities of full-time faculty members
  • Serve in the rotation of Administrators on Duty
  • All UWC-USA employees are expected to provide varying levels of leadership in order to support the UWC mission. Examples include but are not limited to :
  • Actively participating and contributing to committee or task force assignments, providing leadership in campus-wide events or initiatives, strategic planning efforts, in the experiential education program, the dormitories, dining hall, and / or in physical plant initiatives.

  • Initiating strategic discussions and sharing thoughtful and innovative ideas with your co-workers for carrying out the UWC mission and successfully completing day to day work assignments.
  • Demonstrating a growth mindset by believing and acknowledging that intelligence, skills, learning and creativity can all grow with time and experience
  • In all interactions, upholding the UWC mission and values, and creating an environment that promotes and values diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Position Qualifications

    Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience in Experiential Education
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills along with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience with Google suite, Excel, PowerSchool
  • Desire to contribute creatively and effectively to experiential education program to best reflect the UWC-USA mission and values
  • Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree
  • Experience in teaching or residential life in a boarding school setting
  • Knowledge of the UWC-USA program strongly preferred
