Primary Position Objectives
The UWC-USA program - a two-year experience that integrates our Academic, Co-curricular, and Residential programs - prepares students to serve as catalysts for greater unity, peace and sustainability in the world. We support students in the practice of our mission during their two years on campus and challenge them to live our mission for a lifetime.
The Director of Co-curricular Learning contributes to the school's mission across the full program. The Director leads the development and implementation of the Querencia and Basecamp curricula, ensuring that they integrate our commitments to place-based education, peacebuilding and integral sustainability. Together with the Dean of Teaching & Learning and Associate Head of School, the Director of Co-curricular Learning will ensure the coherence of student experience across the Querencia and Basecamp programs.
Responsibilities include being knowledgeable about the role of IB CAS in the Diploma Programme, as well as the relationship between CAS and UWC's deep commitment to place-based, experiential, and mission-aligned learning. Additionally, the Director supports and guides the CAS Coordinator (Community Engagement Manager) to ensure the implementation of CAS experiences, supervising directly CAS leaders, CAS supervisors, students and staff; oversees CAS data management and integration; reports the progress of students to the Dean of Teaching and Learning and IB Diploma Program (IBDP) Coordinator; assesses student fulfillment of the CAS learning outcomes; and ensures that UWC-USA meets reporting requirements as required by the IBDP. Beyond the co-curricular program, the Director supports other programming areas in formal or informal ways. They fulfill their responsibilities in accord with the UWC mission and values as well as the school's strategic plan, foundational documents, IBDP authorization, ISAS accreditation, best practices in experiential education, and best practices in teaching and learning.
The Director of Co-curricular Learning is employed on a 10-month agreement that runs from 1 August to 31 May and is paid over the course of 12 months. Their summer and winter holiday travel plans should not interfere with their professional obligations at the beginning of August, mid December, early January, and late May.
Position Responsibilities
IB teaching
- Teach one code of an IB subject, determined by the academic area of expertise, including all responsibilities indicated with the teaching of the subject (group meetings, expeditionary learning, etc.)
Program Leadership
Leads the Co-curricular team in the development, implementation and advancement of the co-curricular curriculumSupervises all faculty sponsors of Querencia and Basecamp, and all Expeditionary Learning activities (biweekly expeditions, Project Week & Southwest Studies)Promotes reflective practice for Querencia and Basecamp leaders, sponsors and students by consistently modeling reflection habits and skill in their managerial roleFamiliarize students, colleagues, parents and the wider community with the co-curricular program and its importance in the curriculumPromotes and publicizes student achievements in the co-curricular programInforms and works with outside providers in their involvement in co-curricular experiencesOrganizes professional development for Querencia and Basecamp leaders and sponsorsProgram Administration
Supervises the Community Engagement Manager & Basecamp Coordinator to coordinate the Querencia and Basecamp schedules and logistics in conjunction with leaders, including transportation, room reservations and supplies / equipmentDesigns and administers the Querencia and Basecamp registration process for studentsCoordinates attendance tracking among Querencia and Basecamp leaders and sponsorsCoordinates the student Querencia and Basecamp interviews among leaders and student advisors.Supports documentation as needed related to IB CAS portfolios, reporting, and program costs / contracts and invoicesReports completion / non-completion of CAS to the IB on IBIS.Helps coordinate and ensure continuity of program evaluationIdentifies safety issues (risk assessment and child protection)Develops and maintain the co-curricular handbook, including policy statements and resourcesCollaborates with the Dean of Teaching and Learning and Registrar to supervise narrative reporting for Querencia and BasecampManages the co-curricular budgetMaintains co-curricular records and reportsProgram Integration
Supports the Dean of Teaching and Learning in their effort to further integrate UWC CAS with other elements of the IB curriculumSupports faculty's leadership of biweekly learning expeditions as needed, including driving for two winter learning expeditionsSupervises with the co-curricular team to integrate Querencia and Basecamp Teams as weekly loci of experiential education on campusSupervises the Community Engagement Manager to deliver the IB CAS PortfolioStudent Supervision
Educates students on all aspects of the CAS programme, including the meaning and purpose of the CAS learning outcomesProvide ongoing guidance and support to students, including feedback on student reflections, assistance with goal setting and monitoring student progressAssigns and monitors student leaderships or CAS projects as neededSponsors CAS activities and leads expeditionary outingsParticipates in CAS student interviewsPeriodically review students' CAS portfoliosWrites periodic student reports as part of the school's formal evaluation processReviews proposals for new CAS activitiesUWC-USA Leadership
Serve as an AdvisorLead one Basecamp or Querencia activityGenerally, fulfill all responsibilities of full-time faculty membersServe in the rotation of Administrators on DutyAll UWC-USA employees are expected to provide varying levels of leadership in order to support the UWC mission. Examples include but are not limited to :Actively participating and contributing to committee or task force assignments, providing leadership in campus-wide events or initiatives, strategic planning efforts, in the experiential education program, the dormitories, dining hall, and / or in physical plant initiatives.
