POSITION TITLE: Summer Camp Activity Counselor
REPORTS TO: Program Coordinator
DATE RANGE: 7-26 July 2025
STATUS: Seasonal/Full-Time Positions/Hourly
Position Summary:
The Army and Navy Academy are seeking seasonal summer Camp Counselors prepared to create and provide campers with a unique camp setting focused on success and individual achievement. Camp Counselors supervise camper participation in structured and unstructured activities, contribute to the provision of a safe and nurturing environment, demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of campers, and interact appropriately with campers and staff in a variety of situations. Camp Counselors appropriately model behavior and use positive behavior-management techniques, including enthusiasm, attitude, sense of humor, patience, and self-control.
Responsibilities/Duties:
- Actively participate in staff orientation, training, and scheduled daily review meetings
- Demonstrate character qualities such as caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility
- Prepare campus facilities for camper arrival and departure
- Assist with the planning, facilitation, and supervision of specific activities based on qualifications, experience, and skills
- Oversee, and facilitate scheduled morning, afternoon, and evening activities
- Remain vigilant of campers, taking the initiative to engage and positively redirect misbehaving campers
- Correct and document situations that endanger campers’ emotional or physical safety
- Assist with camper arrival days and additional camp-related activities
- Maintain positive relations with parents and the general public
- Mediate conflicts between campers and report any crucial concerns to senior staff
- Promptly notify an administrator or senior staff when there is reason to believe a camper is at risk or in danger due to such issues as program failure, bullying, sexual harassment/misconduct, depression, or suicide ideation
- Follow and enforce personnel guidelines as outlined in summer Personnel Policies
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Desired Qualifications:

Current CPR & First Aid certification

Previous work with summer camps or interaction with large groups of children
Required Qualifications:

Minimum 18 years of age

Minimum high school diploma or equivalent

Professional demeanor, and excellent verbal and written communication skills

The ability to work well with children, the public, and staff

Consistent demonstration of dependability, responsibility, honesty, integrity, adaptability, and willingness to act as a role model to campers and staff

Ability to observe and evaluate participant activities, enforce safety regulations and mitigate risk by applying appropriate policies and procedures

Ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in emergencies

Successfully pass a background check and drug screening as a condition of employment
Special Considerations:
Summer Camp Counselors may reside in Academy housing for the contracted work period
