PURPOSE:
The Quality Control Specialist oversees and ensures the quality of lumber and related products at our retail yard. This role involves inspecting incoming and outgoing materials, identifying and resolving quality issues, and maintaining compliance with industry standards. The ideal candidate will have a strong attention to detail, knowledge of lumber grades and standards, and the ability to communicate effectively with purchasing, yard staff, and management.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Product Inspection:
- Inspect lumber and wood products to verify quality, grade, and adherence to company and industry standards.
- Identify defects, inconsistencies, and other quality issues, documenting findings accurately.
- Perform final quality checks on orders before they are shipped to ensure they meet customer specifications.
- Be the final sign off for all deliveries leaving the yard, ensuring the truck is loaded properly and complying with all transportation safety standards.
- Inspect and verify stock credit returns to the yard. Work with the Yard Supervisor to process and put away credits accurately.

Inventory & Quality Management:
- Work closely with yard and inventory teams to ensure quality products are stocked and readily available.
- Maintain records of inspections, rejected items, and accepted materials, and update inventory information as needed.
- Recommend adjustments to inventory based on product quality and customer demand.

Reporting & Documentation:
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly quality reports, highlighting trends, recurrent issues, and improvements needed.
- Document and report any product deficiencies, damages, or discrepancies, escalating issues to management when necessary.
- Work with purchasing and yard teams to develop preventive measures and improve quality control processes.

Safety & Compliance:
- Ensure that all quality control activities comply with safety regulations and standards.
- Participate in safety training and actively promote a safe work environment in the yard.
Monitor and maintain equipment used for quality inspections, reporting any maintenance needs.
COMPETENCIES/SKILLS:
- Strong attention to detail with a commitment to quality.
- Basic math skills to verify measurements and calculate product specifications.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with suppliers, coworkers, and customers.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and experience with inventory management systems is an advantage.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS:.
- Ability to stand, walk, and lift items up to 80lbs throughout the shift.
- Comfortable working in an outdoor yard environment with exposure to various weather conditions.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Experience in the lumber or construction materials industry.
- Forklift certification or willingness to obtain certification
