The Finance & Accounting Department of Arnold & Porter has an opening for a Staff Accountant. The Staff Accountant may work 100% virtual/remote in a firm-approved U.S. state as part of the “Gideon” office or in the physical Washington, DC office working a hybrid work schedule. The Staff Accountant will handle daily client trust activity and the maintenance of client trust files, reconciling the general ledger accounts, and preparing and analyzing monthly financial statements and preparing financial schedules.

Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To
- Reviewing and preparing reconciliations on a monthly basis for assigned balance sheet accounts.
- Responding to day-to-day general ledger expense queries, providing information, and preparing/inputting journal entries (including reclasses) as needed. Providing detail information and reporting as required.
- Creating and distributing financial reports in firm’s financial reports system monthly and on as needed basis.
- Assisting with the interim and year-end audits. Preparing schedules and providing information to auditors. Responding and researching all questions from the auditors as necessary.
- Preparing daily reports for the monitoring of cash balances and ensuring appropriate funding.
- Researching and resolving trust issues.
- Posting client trust activity, including receipts and disbursements.
- Assisting in the review of all trust accounts on at least a bi-annual basis to provide guidance to attorneys on resolution of stale-dated trust accounts.
- Reconciling trust bank accounts.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of two years of experience in general ledger/financial reporting area, with experience at a law firm or other professional services organization preferred.
- Public accounting or audit experience preferred. CPA or CPA candidate preferred.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (data manipulation, advanced formulas, pivot tables, vlookups, etc.)
- High level of business acumen and ability to multi-task.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to assess pertinent information, anticipate issues and outcomes, and make effective decisions.
- Ability to prepare accurate, highly detailed work product.
- Strong client service skills.
- Ability to organize time, prioritize workload effectively, and work independently.
- Flexibility to work additional hours as necessary.
