Brief Description
MAIN FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Unit Director, is responsible for meeting qualifications and maintaining the performance standards of the Arnot Health and the Surgical Department. The Sterile Processing Surgical Services Technician performs and participates in decontamination, cleaning, assembling, packaging, scanning, sterilization, storage and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment. Collaborates with the surgical staff and management team in daily operations pertaining to inventory control, expense reduction, and instrumentation requests. Assist surgeons with endoscopy procedures and obtain phlebotomy labs for surgical patients. Receives, disinfects, and redistributes equipment as well as necessary good soft supplies in the Central Services area.
Reports to: Surgical Services Unit Director.

Changes all filters to the machine for preventative maintenance. Operates and maintains logbooks for the Autoclave, DSD machine, veriscan, scope buddy plus, sonic washer, and washer disinfector. Prepares machines for repair.**2
Cleans and processes Scopes and surgical instruments – understands and acts upon cleaning parameters for all items used in surgery, i.e. understands the processing requirements for hand-washing items as compared to knowing what items allowed in machine washed

- 3.Performs biological testing on autoclaves and chemical disinfectors, updates charts and logs. Fully understands the procedures for biological testing provides for guidance when implants and non-implantable processed items are requested for just in time sterilization.**4. Is responsible for instrument processing, cleaning and sterilization – reads and understands tray manufacturing list. Recognizes instruments by name and services usage. 5. Anticipates the need according to supply and demand based on operating room schedule and facility needs.**6.Is responsible for instrument maintenance (milking, oiling, etc.) –basic**7. Sanitizes, maintains, and distributes; equipment, instruments, and soft medical supplies to hospital departments and IDMH campus clinics. 8. Coordinates pick up and drop off, for instruments, equipment, and medical supplies to hospital departments and AMS clinics. Verifies that equipment functions properly for equipment repair or replacement and removes defective equipment. 9. Properly wraps supplies and seal pack instruments for sterilization.**10.Must properly load, run, and unload autoclave and know the parameters, along with negative and positive results and what actions to take when results is positive. Provides quality control through routine testing and cleaning to ensure sterilization equipment and instruments are functioning properly. Responsible for contacting nurse manager, surgical services should a positive result or load recall occur.**11.Coordinates instrument repairs – works with clinical staff to ensure all surgical instruments are in operational condition by detecting leaks, worn or lose parts or other indications. Works with Operating Room staff to ensure sufficient on-hand quantity is available. 12.Keeps updated on the use of new equipment. Prepares requisitions for equipment repairs. Assists with inventories. Keeps monthly logs of environmental activity 13.Restocks supplies, and equipment for the OR and SPD and assists with inventory and ordering. 14.Cleans assigned areas by washing furnishings, floors and equipment with special cleaning solutions and disinfectants to prevent spread of disease. Cleans between each case and assists in preparation of room for next case.
- Assists in assembling and setting up the Endoscopy room with supplies, instruments, and any other equipment for the procedure. Tests and prepares all equipment. Knows the function/use, maintenance/care of endoscopy equipment and instruments. 16.Assists the physician with various procedures endoscopy. – based on department needs. 17.Performs required Phlebotomy duties with strict adherence to proper patient identification and specimen labeling and following all safety guidelines and procedures according to established laboratory policy. 18.Is responsible for attending all annual mandatory educational programs as required by position. 19.It is understood that this lists typical duties for the classification and is not to be considered inclusive of all duties which may be assigned. 20.Provides age-appropriate care to children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients. 21.Employee understands and demonstrates the importance of satisfying the needs of the customer/patients by interacting with him/her in a friendly and caring way, being customer needs, both psychologically and physically, and by taking in the initiative to maintain communication with the customer in order to provide a secure and pleasant experience with the Medical Center.
- Highschool diploma or equivalent experience required.
- Must complete 10 contact hours or CEU credits annually.
- A central service technician who does not meet the requirements shall have 18 months from the date of hire to obtain the certified registered central service technician credential or the certified sterile processing and distribution technician credential. This certification must be maintained.
- Maintain a current certification as a CSPDT, unless grandfathered in.
- CPR, Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days of the hire date.
- Prior training and/or experience as a phlebotomist required.
Candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Knowledge of applicable sanitary, infection control and safety standards sufficient to be able to perform assignments within safety parameters is preferred.
- Must have a thorough knowledge of aseptic techniques and procedures, sterilization techniques and procedures, infection control and workflow principles and requirements, equipment and supply processing, demonstrates and exercises judgment to provide necessary supplies and equipment for patient care is preferred.
