WEEKEND POSITION

The schedule for this position is three 12-hour shifts, from 5:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

MAIN FUNCTIONS:

Responsible for obtaining quality blood samples using a variety of phlebotomy methods (venous, heel stick, and capillary) using standard safety equipment for all age groups with strict adherence to regulatory requirements and collection procedures. Perform tasks such as Inpatient Venipuncture, Outpatient Venipuncture, Registration, and Test Order Entry. Duties may require specimen transport and specimen delivery duties. Reports to Support Services Section Manager.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

CORE COMPETENCIES:

  • 1. Performs required Phlebotomy duties with strict adherence to proper patient identification, specimen labeling, handling, and transportation following all safety guidelines and procedures according to established laboratory policy. Employee will be trained if no prior experience.

  • 2. Working with a variety of computer programs and systems.

  • 3. Performs all required miscellaneous office functions, i.e. answers phones, checks and distributes faxes, maintains stock and inventory, and checks refrigeration if documented.

  • 4. Employee understands and demonstrates the importance of satisfying the needs of the customer/patient by interacting with him/ her in a friendly and caring way, being attentive to the customer’s needs, both psychologically and physically, and by taking the initiative to maintain communication with the customer to provide a secure and pleasant experience with the ArnotHealth.

  • 5. Understands that work in the Laboratory is dynamic and that the duties of a phlebotomist will change over time as regulatory requirements and the general environment of healthcare changes.

  • 6. Phlebotomists may be required to support evening, night, weekend, or holiday shifts for both outpatient and inpatient specimen collection.

  • 7. Phlebotomists may be required to travel to perform specimen collection.

  • 8. It is understood that this job description lists typical duties for the classification and is not to be considered inclusive of all duties which may be assigned.

  • GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Organizes and prioritizes workload and can identify time-sensitive tests and prioritizing as appropriate.

Demonstrates understanding of and maintains compliance with regulations appropriate to assigned duties and is ready for unannounced inspections by staff, local, state, and/or federal regulatory agencies. This includes, but is not limited to: Medical Center, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.

Maintains a clean and orderly work environment, following laboratory, hospital, and accrediting agency safety and infection control guidelines.

Is familiar with and demonstrates Quality Improvement principles and participates in the process as appropriate.

Provides age-appropriate care to neonate, infant, children, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Required: High School Diploma. Computer keyboard skills and navigation are required. Completion of a phlebotomy training program or equivalent experience is required within one year. A valid driver’s license is required. Medical terminology and/or knowledge of basic anatomy is preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physical effort required. Required to frequently lift objects up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift objects up to 40 pounds. Moderate reaching, bending, and stooping. Required to be on one’s feet much of the time.
