MAIN FUNCTION :
The Decentralized Staff Development Instructor is responsible for providing appropriate education programs / opportunities for the staff in a specific area. Works in collaboration with the Unit Director and Education Department. Reports to Director of Department to which assigned.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- 1. Demonstrates the use of the nursing process in clinical practice utilizing assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation.
- 2. Demonstrates a high level of clinical expertise and technical skills within the unit / department.
- 3. Formulates educational / staff development programs utilizing total age appropriate criteria which meets the needs of individual patients.
- 4. Utilizes theories of teaching and learning to meet identified patient / family and staff educational needs.
- 5. Coordinates the orientation process of new employees at the unit base level and serves as a resource for preceptors.
- 6. Collaborates with the Unit Director to identify educational needs within the unit / department, and formulates a written goal-directed plan of education to address priority areas.
- 7. Is responsible for providing staff development, educational programs, and in servicing, at the unit level as appropriate, to cover all staff / all shifts.
- 8. Maintains appropriate documentation of orientation activities and on-going educational programs including objectives, class content, evaluations, and employee attendance.
- 9. Maintains appropriate documentation of the following on the unit : Competency completion, Inservice / Staff Development programs, and Certification. Forwards necessary information to the Education Department.
- 10. Evaluates the effectiveness of teaching and educational programs using objective measures and submits an annual report to the Unit Director on the attainment of the unit educational goals.
- 11. Assesses the needs; plans; implements; and evaluates educational programs given at the unit level.
- 12. Performs review of educational programs and analyzes appropriateness of programs at least annually.
- 13. Demonstrates in-depth knowledge base, problem solving, and critical thinking skills by appropriate actions in managing patients and the development of staff educational programs.
- 14. Identifies and acts upon potential risk management issues. Includes this in staff education in services / programs.
- 15. Demonstrates a clear understanding of legal and ethical issues in all aspects of patient care and unit function.
- 16. Follows Arnot Health / Division of Nursing policy / procedure regarding infection control.
- 17. Assesses learner needs and incorporates adult learning principles in the planning, implementation and evaluation of education programs through multiple venues including bedside, e-learning, didactic class presentations and simulation scenarios.
- 18 . Education encompasses new staff orientation as related to both theoretical knowledge and technical skills, certification preparation, regulatory and DNV guidelines / standards.
- 19. Ensures that educational programs are aligned with Arnot Health, Mission, Values and Goals.
- 20. Demonstrates ability to perform competencies as outlined in unit specific Competency Assessment Tools.
- 21. Serves as an educational consultant to task forces, committees and project teams relating to policy, procedure and new program development.
- 22. Integrates research into practice and program development.
23. Facilitates optimal learning experiences utilizing the expertise of a multidisciplinary team members (nurses, doctors, other specialties, etc.) to achieve excellent patient care and outcomes.
EDUCATION :
Current NYS nursing licensure required, certification in specialty preferred. Bachelor of Science in Nursing required. Master of Science in Nursing preferred. ACLS, NNRP, S.T.A.B.L.E Instructor desirable, or completed in a negotiable time frame (not to exceed one year).
EXPERIENCE :
Minimum 3 years of appropriate nursing practice required. Excellent communication and writing abilities.
CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS :
Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days of hire date.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS :
Ability to frequently lift 15-20 pounds. Some reaching and stooping. Required to be on feet much of the time.
