Job Summary/Scope

The relationships between funeral homes, coroners, and medical examiners (MEs) are essential to maximizing donation opportunities. Building a culture of donation through education, outreach, and collaboration is essential to advancing our donation. The Funeral Home & Coroner Liaison (FHCL) must build and leverage relationships to increase organ, tissue, and eye referrals. This role resolves complex issues impeding donation opportunities through problem-solving, negotiating, and leveraging relationships.

This role is responsible for developing and implementing professional education programs for Medical Examiners (ME)/Coroners and funeral home entities serviced by Arkansas Regional Organ Recovery Agency (ARORA). Duties include meeting with funeral directors, ME/Coroners, and key personnel to develop an understanding of the flow of decision-making and the importance of collaboration within the organization as it relates to donor activity. Services provided by the role include data analysis implementing marketing strategies with key partners, guiding funeral home personnel in the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to donation, providing donor education and awareness programs to ME/Coroners and funeral homes, conducting donor and/or referral follow-up conferences and meetings, and evaluation of missed donation opportunities.

Essential Functions

  • Exercises discretion and has the authority to formulate, affect, interpret, or implement management policies or operating practices related to development strategies with funeral homes, ME/Coroners.
  • Responsible for strategic assignments with respect to programs aimed at development and outreach for the mission of ARORA with donation partners.
  • Designs and implements a unique strategic plan per regulatory standards and education programs (examples include: targeted in-services and annual professional education) that will optimize organ, tissue, and eye donation.
  • Regularly conducts on-site visits to funeral homesand ME/Coroner agencies as scheduled.
  • Utilizes judgment to adapt strategic plans for unique situations and constituency relating to ME/Coroner, funeral home and eye tissue, and organ donation. This includes developing strategies based on an individualized assessment and analysis of data and records.
  • Responsible for reviewing records and determining if ME/Coroner and funeral homes are following operating procedures and/or are not optimizing donor potential.
  • Analyze and verify monthly reporting data to formulate preventative/corrective action plans and strategies to help the funeral home improve communication and processes for donor activity on behalf of ARORA.
  • Conducts medical record reviews in compliance with regulatory standards and ARORA SOPs.
  • Update internal information systems with missed opportunities and corrective action plans.
  • Communicate the outcome for organ/tissue/eye donors to the ME/Coroner and funeral home personnel involved.
  • Responds to referrals, rounding, case activity, etc. at designated or directed location.
  • Facilitate After Action Review meetings with key funeral home personnel and ME/Coroner.
  • Collaborates with ARORA staff and funeral home personnel during referral and case activity to ensure an environment that maximizes donation potential.
  • Reports to ME/Coroner and funeral home director to help with conflict resolution and create cohesive donation experience.
  • Communicate with ME/Coroner regarding their role in the donation process.
  • Address any donation-related issues/concerns involving law enforcement.
  • Guide process improvement plans related to law enforcement agencies.
  • Works autonomously, setting their own schedule of activities and capable of interacting effectively with key personnel and the general public.
  • Serves as ARORA super user for MDI log.
  • Responsible for responding to issues with funeral homes, coroners, and medical examiners 24/7 when a loss of donation opportunity is possible via a company-provided phone.

Secondary Functions

1. Promote organ, tissue, and eye donation by providing internal and external training within assigned facilities; this may include special events.

2. Increase donor referrals from non-hospital sources.

Organizational Expectations

  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance at assigned work location.
  • Accurately document timekeeping records.
  • Completes and maintains appropriate documentation in a timely and thorough manner including activities. Examples include: training documentation, mileage, expenses, electronic schedule of AROAR events, and other forms.

  • Attendance at staff meetings, training programs, and/or in-services meetings, as required.

  • Demonstrates professional conduct and behavior reflective of ARORA’s respect, honor, admiration, and reverence for the donor and donor family.
  • Fosters effective relationships with client representatives.
  • With the approval of the division Director, serves on national committees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

  • Works in various locations, including normal office environment, hospital, and other locations as essential and secondary functions necessitates.
  • Frequent travel is required by personal vehicle to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Required to carry a cellular telephone for business purposes.
  • Non-smoking office.

Work Hours

Extensive travel, some overnight. Forty-hour workweek with occasional weekends, holidays, or evenings. Responsible for response to issues with funeral home, coroner, and medical examiners 24/7 when loss of donation opportunity is possible via company provided phone.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree in a related field such as Mortuary science degree, or two years relevant experience as a Trade Embalmer, Funeral Director, Coroner, or Autopsy Technician.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license, reliable automobile, and proof of automobile insurance.
  • Must maintain required vaccination and/or health screenings to minimize the potential for disease transmission.
  • Proficiency in public speaking before a variety of audiences.
  • Intermediate computer skills.
  • Consistent demonstration of attention to detail, precision, accuracy, and customer satisfaction.
  • Possess strong prioritization skills and the ability to effectively manage multiple projects and tasks.
  • Ability to utilize general office equipment, software, and must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Pay: $56,300.00 - $69,850.00 per year
