Lead Motor Vehicle Mechanic

Position Summary :

Maintains service operations by inspecting and maintaining vehicles. Repairs, overhauls, and maintains various classes of vehicles as well as motorized / non-motorized Ground Support equipment. Keeps equipment available for use by inspecting and testing vehicles, including completing preventive maintenance such as engine tune-ups, oil changes, transmission repairs, tire rotation and changes, wheel balancing, and filter replacement.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Establish and maintain the best possible service relationship and communications with Project staff.
• Overhauls and repairs engines and transmissions on gas and diesel equipment
• Performs tune-ups on vehicles.
• Overhauls, repairs, and / or replaces other vehicle parts, such as parts on steering and brake systems.
• Replaces shock absorbers, checks and balances wheels, and checks for proper tire alignment.
• Performs diversified electrical work on all automotive and related equipment, such as servicing, installing batteries and terminals, repairing, and adjusting lights, and repairing generators and starters.
• Diagnostic equipment is used to locate vehicle defects.
• Troubleshoots and repairs or replaces digital electronic components and computers.
• Fabricates and / or reconstructs equipment by using gas, arc, MIG, or TIG welding methods.
• Road tests vehicles to locate operational defects before returning to active use.
• Overhauls, repairs, and maintains heavy equipment, including tractors, dump trucks, backhoes, etc.
• Operates shop machines to rebuild or fabricate machine parts.
• Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock, placing orders, and verifying receipts.
• Maintains vehicle appearance by cleaning, washing, and painting.
• Maintains vehicle records by recording service and repairs.
• Keeps shop equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, and performing preventive maintenance.
• Use a warranty and evaluate service and parts options.
• Maintains vehicle functional condition by listening to operator complaints, conducting inspections, repairing engine failures, repairing mechanical and electrical systems malfunctions, replacing parts and components, and repairing body damage.
• Daily personnel report for the shop, work hours, and / or shift scheduling for technicians, assigning and tracking the monthly preventive maintenance schedule and corrective maintenance work.
• Tracked material orders, reported disciplinary concerns to management and Union Steward, and provided shop-assigned personnel annual performance reviews.
• Coordinate activities and / or supervise Mechanics Assistant.
• Must be able to work nights and / or weekends to support emergency response events such as snow removal.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
