Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Automation Engineer III to join our team. This role involves working on multiple projects with complex assignments that require innovative and original solutions. The Automation Engineer III will play a key role in project planning, execution, oversight of junior engineers, and contributing expertise in automation and control systems. This position requires extensive knowledge of industry codes and standards, as well as advanced programming and troubleshooting capabilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work on multiple projects, handling complex assignments that require innovative problem-solving.
- Assist in creating project scopes, schedules, and budgets and execute project plans accordingly.
- Review the work of junior technical staff and provide guidance on best practices.
- Manage projects independently, including reporting on project status to management.
- Exercise judgement in determining work methods and project direction with minimal supervision.
- Apply expertise in hazardous area classification and design of control panels in both classified and unclassified areas.
- Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) in at least one area within the company.
- Create and manage estimates and schedules for assigned engineering and design tasks.
- Review and provide detailed feedback on engineering drawings and reports created by junior engineers.
- Guide the design team to ensure designs are functional, economical, maintainable, and constructible.
- Master level PLC programmer:
- Power User of at least four PLC programming software packages (two must be RSlogix5000 & GE Proficy Machine Edition)
- Able to create or modify PLC programs based on functional specification with additional no support
- Master level HMI programmer:
- Knowledgeable of at least four HMI programming software packages (two of which must be an HMI/SCADA packages)
- Able to create or modify HMI programs based on functional specification with additional no support
- Develop and modify PLC and HMI programs without additional support.
- Lead commissioning and system cutovers with minimal assistance, demonstrating strong troubleshooting skills.
- Read and interpret civil, mechanical, and electrical drawings to support automation system design and troubleshooting.
- Provide on-site and remote support for automation systems in various industries, particularly in oil and gas facilities.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Education:
- Bachelor of Science (B.S.) from an accredited university in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.
- Experience:
- 6 year of engineering and design experience in a related field/industry
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) License preferred
- Technical Skills & Knowledge:
- In-depth knowledge of industry codes and standards, including:
- 49 CFR 195 – All Subparts
- API 1165 & API MPMS
- API RP 500
- NEC 240, 250, 409, 500-504, 720, 725, 800, & UL 508A preferred
- Master-level PLC programming skills, including:
- Expertise in at least four PLC programming software packages (including RSLogix5000. GE Proficy Machine Edition preferred).
- Ability to create and modify PLC programs based on functional specifications without additional support.
- Master-level HMI programming skills, including:
- Proficiency in at least four HMI software packages, including two HMI/SCADA platforms (including Factory Talk View Studio. Proficy iFIX preferred)..
- Ability to create and modify HMI programs based on functional specifications without additional support.
- Ability to independently create:
- I/O lists
- Data maps
- Functional specifications
- Test plans
- Control architecture diagrams
- Operations & Maintenance (O&M) manuals
- Expertise in cutovers & commissioning, demonstrating troubleshooting proficiency with minimal support.
- Preferred familiarity with automation & control requirements in at least two of the following systems:
- Truck loading/unloading racks
- Pipeline tank farms
- Pipeline delivery/origination facilities
- Pipeline pump stations
- Other industries
- Strong understanding of valve types, actuators, and troubleshooting wiring & limit switch settings in field applications.
