ArtCenter College of Design is searching for an experienced Mental Health Counselor - Part Time to join our team.

The salary range for this position: $59.00 - 61.00 per hour.

Final salary is based on education, experience, skills relevant to the role, and internal equity.

Job Summary

This position is a member of the Center for the Student Experience (CSE) team, under the direct supervision of the Director of Mental Health Services and Campus Counseling and the leadership of the Associate Provost for Student Affairs/Dean of Students. In support of the core educational mission of the College, the Mental Health Counselor provides therapeutic support and clinical care essential to the transition, retention, and success of students. The Counseling Service at ArtCenter practices a brief therapy model, offering undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in degree programs up to five (5) appointments per academic term (each term is 14 weeks long; three terms per year). This position supports all resources and functions of the CSE.


This position fills a part-time work schedule, up to 20 hours per week. (Regular business hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30am–4:30pm. Individual counseling appointments with students may be arranged for additional early evening hours.)


Essential Functions

Mental Health Services — 85%

  • Provide direct mental health counseling services to individual students, couples, and groups regarding a wide range of personal concerns related to their goals, needs, values, attitudes, conflicts, interpersonal relationships, educational or career choices, academic or work functions, education and treatment/referral for alcohol and drug-related issues, and developmental/emotional problems and crises
    • Clients are students enrolled in degree programs at ArtCenter
    • Client therapeutic services require intake assessment, case management, and crisis intervention, and may require on-call and after-hours consultation as needed
  • Provide consultations with College employees (faculty or staff) for successful behavioral interventions and client referrals
  • Provide outreach to students of concern referred through the College’s CARE Team
  • Provide services in an ethically responsible way, consistent with professional guidelines and College policies and procedures
  • Provide relevant, current information on resources and services both on-campus and off-campus; refer persons to community and campus services as appropriate, such as in areas of psychiatric/psychological services and other social services

Campus Life — 10%

  • Assist CSE with implementation of other campus life initiatives, co-curricular programs, leadership development activities, and other outreach and education projects that contribute to student success
  • Develop and implement co-curricular programs that address health and wellness, and art and design excellence
  • Collaborate with CSE colleagues to develop, implement, and evaluate effective educational programs and outreach activities on the prevention, recognition, and treatment of psychological and behavioral problems, and that promote strengths and capacities to optimize student health and wellness
    • Educational programs may include topics such as building self-confidence, learning healthy coping behaviors, creating a balanced life, stress management and other life skills, finding your passion, substance use/abuse awareness, eating disorders prevention, sexual assault recovery, suicide prevention, peer-to-peer support, and homesickness
  • Promote and develop programs and services that appeal to and address the needs and concerns of a diverse student population (in terms of race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, sexual orientation, abilities, age, etc.)

Operational — 5%

  • Provide training to CSE staff and student workers who assist with student intake and referrals
  • Participate in College committees, task forces, shared governance groups, etc., as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director, Assistant Dean of Students, and/or Dean of Students


Required Qualifications:


Required

  • Master’s degree in counseling, counseling psychology, psychology, social work, or other fields relevant to job responsibilities from an accredited college or university
  • Licensed, or eligible for licensure, as a mental health provider in the state of California within two years of appointment
  • At least one (1) year work experience, full-time and/or approved internship, conducting clinical interviews, making diagnostic assessments, and formulating treatment or referral plans for individuals with a broad spectrum of psychological problems
  • Experience providing individual, couples, and/or group counseling; and crisis intervention for counseling emergencies
  • Experience and/or familiarity with the unique psychological and developmental needs of a diverse undergraduate/graduate student population (including, but not limited to, military/veteran students, LGBTQ students, students with disabilities, international students, undergraduate and graduate students, etc.)
  • Committed to understanding the needs of a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students and able to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Knowledge and adherence to professional standards related to American Psychological Association (APA)
  • Strong verbal, written, and presentation communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage work priorities and projects, including those with highly sensitive content and confidential parameters
  • Strong analytical skills, computer proficiency and demonstrated use of computer applications, database maintenance and web-based technology
  • Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends when necessary and to participate in on-call emergency response coverage
  • Commitment to establishing partnerships with and providing consultations for faculty and other campus and community members and organizations
  • Ability to make referrals to, and receive referrals from off-campus counselors
  • Commitment to collaboration and working as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • A commitment to diversity, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within ArtCenter’s diverse communities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, counseling psychology, clinical psychology, social work, or a related field
  • 3–5 years post-licensure counseling experience (may include practicum, internships, and/or post-doctoral fellowships, but should include experience conducting clinical interviews, making diagnostic assessments, and formulating treatment or referral plans for individuals with a broad spectrum of psychological and mental health experiences)
  • Experience providing counseling to diverse populations (racial/ethnic, socioeconomic class, gender, sexual orientation, age, etc.)
  • Experience working with art and/or design students in a fast-paced, academically rigorous, and competitive environment
  • Working knowledge of current clinical, legal, and ethical issues relevant to trends in college student mental health
  • Experience conducting specialized counseling and/or monitoring prescribed treatment (e.g., substance abuse recovery, eating disorders, depression, anxiety)
  • Experience with or knowledge of facilitating campus-wide health promotion programming and giving presentations on mental health and wellness topics
  • Experience working on a college or university care and concern/early alert/behavioral intervention/threat assessment team
  • Prior experience with educational technologies, scheduling software, and/or online client information systems is highly desirable
