Hospitality Aides will work assisting the Certified Nursing Assistants by answering call lights, passing ice, passing trays, and restocking carts until they are trained as Certified Nursing Assistants.
Certified Nursing Assistants provide basic nursing duties for patients who are temporarily or permanently unable to care for themselves. CNA duties range from helping with a patient’s personal hygiene to taking the patient’s blood pressure readings.
Why should you consider being a CNA?
Emotionally Rewarding Career
A certified nursing assistant career is rewarding for compassionate individuals who enjoy caring for people. The job may be demanding, but you can derive a sense of satisfaction from helping patients feel comfortable and loved. Because CNAs spend a lot of time with patients, they have the opportunity to develop close relationships, particularly with those individuals who need long-term care.
Exposure to Other Health Careers
CNAs work closely with licensed practical nurses and registered nurses. This provides an opportunity for you to watch these professionals daily to understand their work, which is beneficial if you plan to advance to these positions in the future. You also have the opportunity to obtain professional guidance from them so you can make choices that are best for you.
Prerequisite for Entry into a Nursing Program
Some nursing schools limit admission to applicants who are certified CNAs with work experience or who are working towards obtaining a CNA certification. The experience prepares students for the level of work required of nursing students in the typically rigorous program.
Flexible Schedules
CNAs typically work full-time schedules. However, because patients require care at all hours of the day and night, you can find a position that offers a flexible schedule.
Job Outlook
Employment of nursing assistants is projected to grow 9% from 2018 to 2028, faster than the average for all occupations. Employment of orderlies is projected to grow 5 percent from 2018 to 2028, about as fast as the average for all occupations.
As the baby-boomer population ages, nursing assistants and orderlies will be needed to assist and care for elderly patients in long-term care facilities, such as nursing homes. Older people are more likely than younger people to have disorders such as dementia, or to live with chronic diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes. More nursing assistants will be needed to care for patients with these conditions. Talk about job security!
