Overview
Position Summary - General
The Underwriting Assistant provides support to Underwriter(s) and/or Sr. Underwriter(s) and will have a limited prior background in workers compensation insurance. The Underwriting Assistant’s role is standardized in nature at its outset, but evolves over time applying basic skills, and may develop advanced skills using tools and equipment appropriate for the position or specialization. The role is primarily an internal support role, though external contact with agents/customers is expected and increases with time.
Duties and tasks reflect variety and complexity underwriting workers compensation insurance applications within guidelines set forth by carrier partners. The Underwriting Assistant will resolve routine questions and problems, and refers more complex issues to higher levels. He/she works with all departments (teams) to gain knowledge of service and operational processes and procedures, which will be dominated by tasks to expedite the underwriting process, including data entry.
At an advanced level, the Underwriting Assistant may determine whether to accept, modify or decline a risk – both new and renewal business – through a comprehensive assessment of risk features, including classification codes, loss history, and risk engineering surveys, among others.
The Underwriting Assistant will, over time, engage in communication via email, telephone, and via TEAMS meetings with insured stakeholders, including insurance agents and risk managers.
This role is based in our Scottsdale office and is a telecommuter position.
How you'll make an impact
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Monitoring email correspondence and other administrative tasks to expedite the underwriting process.
- Provide support to Underwriter(s) and/or Sr. Underwriter(s) analyzing and managing new and renewal workers compensation applicants, including risk selection and classification.
- Set up submissions in Artex and/or carrier systems.
- Research and analysis to identify, gather and organize information to provide recommendations to Underwriter and/or Sr. Underwriter.
- Policy Administration: Accurate, timely policy and endorsement requests; responses to bureau inquiries/criticisms.
- Fulfill agents’ requests for certificates of insurance issuance, loss runs, copies of policies, copies of invoicing, etc.
- Strong professional communication, both verbally and in writing, with internal and external stakeholders, including insurance agents, insurance carriers, and insured customer risk management teams.
- Support of general questions regarding renewal status, policy issuance, endorsement status, cancellation status, and billing inquires, commission questions, etc.)
- Reconciling and analyzing customer monthly billing reports.
About You
- High School Graduate or GED as minimum education requirements. Prefer graduation from college or related work experience in similar environment.
- 3 or more years of related experience (insurance, financial institutions, or business office environment), ideally within workers compensation line of business.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills; time management.
- Strong ability to assess risk within underwriting guidelines.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Excel.
