POSITION SUMMARY (Basic purpose or primary function of job)
The Director, Benefits (the “Director”) is responsible for analyzing, designing, implementing, and administering benefits and wellness strategies designed to attract, engage, and retain talent. Reporting to the SVP, People Operations, the Director’s areas of responsibilities include health benefits, retirement plans, wellness programs, and managing compliance with Federal and State laws including Workers’ Compensation, ADA, FMLA, FLSA, ACA, COBRA, ERISA, and HIPAA. The Director will be responsible for administering employee policy compliance processes and will maintain a working knowledge of legislation as it relates to pay and benefit programs.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (Principal responsibilities or job duties)
1. Responsible for management and administration of health and ancillary benefit plans, including open enrollment, staff enrollment changes and processing monthly invoices.
2. Responsible for administration of FSA, COBRA and FMLA processes.
3. Responsible for administration of retirements plans including maintaining eligibility and vesting records for 401k plan and other legacy retirement plans. Participates as a member of the 401(k) Committee and takes a proactive role in the ongoing review of the plan
4. Drives wellness initiatives including administration of Employee Assistance Program and “Be Your Best You” wellness lunch and learn program with emphasis on health resources and support.
5. Develops communication strategies to drive employee awareness and understanding of all benefit, retirement and wellness programs and partners with the Director, Learning & Development to create educational opportunities.
6. Prepares and distributes annual total rewards/benefits statements to staff.
7. Collaborates with vendors, brokers, and administrative partners in support of our benefits and wellness programs.
8. Works closely with payroll, finance and outside auditors to ensure timely responses are provided to the general, 401(k) and workers’ compensation audits.
9. Establishes and delivers key benefit program metrics, regularly monitoring plan utilization, employee satisfaction and reporting to understand the effectiveness of our benefits strategy.
10. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local legal and regulatory requirements, maintaining a proactive approach with new and anticipated changes to legislation and regulation including administration of FMLA, ADA, COBRA and Workers’ Comp programs.
11. Strives to be industry leading and progressive in our benefits programs. Conducts research of best practices through surveys and other sources of industry information. Oversees the effective use of market data to recommend competitive, innovative, and cost-effective benefit plans. Completion of annual NHC survey.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or equivalent business experience in related field required. An advanced degree (MBA) is preferred.
- Professional certifications (CCP, CEBS, SHRM-CP or SCP, etc.) preferred.
- Knowledge of leading practices and external trends in benefits and HR technology systems.
- Demonstrated track record and expertise in building, leading, and managing a successful benefits function, designing and developing strategies and plans.
- Knowledge of the legal environment of compensation and benefits at National, State and Local levels. Experience in compliance with regulations, for example FLSA, ACA, ADA, COBRA, ERISA, FMLA, & HIPAA.
