Position Summary
Lead the work of staff engaged in performing specialized veterinary work; apply knowledge of animal care, handling, husbandry and veterinary hospital practices to a variety of animals within the City zoo or Animal Care Division; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to the assigned area of responsibility.
This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements
Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.
Associate’s degree in Veterinary Science or a related field; and
Four (4) years of veterinary technician experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License or the ability to obtain within ninety (90) days from date of hire.
Possession of a City Operator’s Permit (COP) within 6 months from hire date.
Possession of a valid, Certified Veterinary Technician license.
Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid euthanasia technician license issued by the State of New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department within six (6) months from date of hire.
Preferred Knowledge
- Basic methods and techniques of veterinary procedures
- Basic principles of anatomy, physiology and behavior of a large variety of animal species
- Basic principles and procedures of safe animal handling and restraint techniques
- Occupational hazards and standard safety practices
- Principles of laboratory testing
- Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations
- Methods and techniques used in the security and control of Class II and III controlled substances
- Modern office procedures, methods and equipment, including computers
Preferred Skills & Abilities
- Plan, organize, coordinate and review the work of lower level staff
- Assist in providing veterinary services to zoo or shelter animals
- Conduct various laboratory tests
- Recognize symptoms and health problems of animals
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Communicate clearly and concisely
- Work independently without supervision
- Manage multiple assignments at the same time
- Prepare clear and concise administrative and financial reports
- Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws and regulations
- Respond to questions and concerns from City employees and the public
