Job Description:
The Finance Director will provide strategic financial leadership and oversee all fiscal operations of Arts for Learning Maryland (A4L). This position is responsible for maintaining financial sustainability, ensuring regulatory compliance, and driving financial planning to support the organization mission and strategic objectives.
Financial Management & Strategy:
- Direct al financial activities including accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, audit, and long-term financial planning
- Develop and implement financial policies and procedures to ensure efficiency, accountability and sustainability
- Lead the annual budgeting process including timely monitoring, forecasting and reprojections throughout the fiscal year
- Oversee cash flow planning and ensure availability of funds as needed.
- Manage banking relationships and maintain appropriate cash flows
- Maintain internal controls to safeguard organizational assets
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting principles (GAAP)
- Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
Leadership & Operations:
- Supervise finance department staff, including hiring, training, and professional development
- Present financial reports (e.g. cash flow, P&L, Balance Sheet) and analysis to the leadership, finance committee, and board of directors
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
- Oversee the annual audit process and tax filings, including form 990
- Work in collaboration with the human resources department (POPS) to ensure accurate payroll accounting records and compliance
- Foster and maintain strong business relationships with banks, auditors, and other professionals in support of A4L business objectives
Grants & Funds Management:
- Oversee grant financial management, including reporting and compliance
- Monitor restricted funds to ensure proper usage and accounting
- Develop financial reports for donors and funding organizations
- Collaborate with development team on grant proposals, financial projections and monthly reconciliation of pledges receivable
- Monitor and manage temporarily restricted and unrestricted funds to ensure the appropriate release of these funds
Qualifications:
- 7 years of non-profit accounting experience
- Proficient knowledge of GAAP, and familiarity with UGG and EDGAR accounting principles
- Strong understanding of IRS regulations regarding 501(c)(3) organizations
- Advanced skills and experience with nonprofit accounting software
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
- CPA desirable
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Financial Edge, or similar)
- Advanced Excel skills including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and complex formulas
- Experience with paperless accounting systems and internal controls
- Knowledge of automated payment systems and banking platforms
Soft Skills
- Outstanding written and verbal communication abilities
- Strong leadership and team management capabilities
- Ability to explain complex financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders
- Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills
- Professional demeanor and ability to maintain confidentiality
