Position Overview:
ArtWaves is seeking a dynamic, highly-skilled Visual Arts Instructor to plan and execute a range of visual art classes and workshops for adults and children. This individual will collaborate closely with our Executive Director, developing and delivering high-quality programming in painting and drawing, fiber art, printmaking, collage, and mosaic. In this people-facing role, the instructor will engage students of all ages and skill levels, from children (grades 4 and up) to adults, fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Program Development and Delivery:
- Work in tandem with the Executive Director to conceptualize, plan, and implement a variety of art classes and workshops.
- Teach and oversee sessions in painting and drawing, fiber art, printmaking, collage, and mosaic and other artistic disciplines as needed.
- Adapt teaching methods to accommodate different age groups, abilities, and skill levels, ensuring all participants feel supported and encouraged.
- Offer community-driven special events and classes, such as children’s art intensives, holiday classes and events, and outreach programs.
- Community Engagement:
- Serve as the public face of ArtWaves, representing the organization’s mission and values at events, in classes, and in community interactions.
- Build strong relationships with participants, families, and community members, contributing to a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.
- Collaborate on community-based projects, such as public art installations, outreach initiatives, and seasonal programs.
- Operations and Safety:
- Ensure a safe, organized, and well-maintained studio environment.
- Follow all organizational policies, including safety protocols, and maintain current CPR certification.
- Undergo and maintain a clear background check, as required.
- Administrative Duties:
- Assist with course registration processes, including providing class descriptions and supply lists.
- Track and report on program participation and outcomes, offering suggestions for continuous improvement.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Education, or a related field preferred. Equivalent experience will be considered.
- Comprehensive knowledge and practical experience in visual art theory, history and practice.
- At least 2 years of visual arts teaching experience, preferably across mixed ages.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with children, adults, and individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability, with a willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed - a majority of our programming takes place on weekends and evenings.
- A commitment to environmental responsibility, progressive values, and fostering an inclusive community.
- Current CPR certification (or willingness to obtain 3 months from hire).
- Successful completion of a background check prior to employment.
