The Sports Field Management Association was formed in 1981 by four industry leaders in an effort to facilitate the sharing of ideas and information. Today, SFMA is an organization of 2,200 professionals who are dedicated to advancing athletic playing surface standards to ensure athlete safety, playability, consistency, and pleasing aesthetics. By combining the science of maintaining turf grasses, infield materials, and other surface elements, members of SFMA are increasing the quality of athlete experiences from youth teams to professional franchises including at many of the most celebrated and historical facilities in the world. The contributions of SFMA members are significant in a global sports market that is expected to exceed $500 billion in 2022.

With annual operating revenues of more than $1 million, SFMA is supported by four full-time staff members and one half-time staff member, as well as a 13-member Board of Directors. Currently, there are 32 chapters of the SFMA in the United States and five International Affiliate Organizations.
The Board seeks their new CEO to lead the organization in implementing and updating the strategic plan to drive sustainable growth and innovation. This growth will be achieved through expanded educational initiatives, the development of strategic partnerships, and diversified revenue streams. Additionally, enhancing programmatic offerings to deliver long-term member value and advancing the organization’s networking platform remain key priorities. The Board looks forward to collaborating with the new CEO in refining and executing the updated strategic plan to position the organization for future success.
A strong, forward-thinking focus on business development is going to be key to the future success of the organization. Working directly with the Board of Directors, the CEO will be responsible for enhancing SFMA’s role and profile as an advocate and positioning the Association as the leader in the field for the years ahead.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer is responsible for the Association’s consistent achievement of its mission, strategy, goals, and objectives. This person oversees all aspects of SFMA programming and human resources. They will perform duties as necessary, including work assigned by the Board of Directors.
We seek a proven executive-level leader whose career in a similar-size or larger national membership organization has been noted by their ability to chart a path forward, exceptional communication skills (written and oral), and a servant leadership style. This person must exhibit success in collaborating with and convening diverse stakeholders sharing common interests and values so that the aspirations and goals of the organization are pursued in a collegial, transparent, and highly participatory manner. Direct experience in the area of field management is not required, though general knowledge of the industry would be highly advantageous. A demonstrated passion for the mission and duty to the industry is critical.
The successful candidate will have a proven record in visionary strategic planning and execution; an innovative and trend-current approach to attracting and retaining membership; a creative tack to marketing and branding; and a comfort level being the face of the organization. We seek a leader who can work collaboratively with a team of professional employees through effective delegation, professional development, and confident decision-making, as well as with a dedicated volunteer Board. The qualified candidate will possess a strong understanding of business and financial acumen, experience in continuous process improvement, and increasing operational efficiencies, and be a data-driven decision-maker.
This person should demonstrate an ability to both raise awareness of the mission of SFMA nationally and to support the best interests of the community they serve. Experience working with stakeholders to build philanthropic and business / sponsorship relationships would be desirable. This leader needs to embody enthusiasm and be highly relational. In addition, some of the important personal attributes we seek include integrity, collaboration, transparency, authenticity, nimbleness, curiosity, humility, emotional intelligence, servant leadership, good listening skills, and a sense of humor.
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field relevant to nonprofit, association management, or business is required. Demonstration of continuing professional education, accreditation in a professional field, and board leadership in a state or national nonprofit, professional, or trade association would be highly valued. A CAE designation would be highly desirable, as would the willingness to complete the designation within the first three years in the role.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this position is between $130,000 and $140,000 and will be commensurate with experience, along with a board-designated annual bonus of up to 20% of base salary. SFMA offers a comprehensive benefits package, including but not limited to paid holidays, vacation, group health and dental, as well as a 401k plan.
