Technical Expert – Lineman

POSITION OVERVIEW 

Highly skilled Lineman Trainer that will perform on the job training to advance the skills and ability of the electrical work force while performing the tasks associated with the construction, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and replacement of underground and overhead electrical power transmission, telecommunications lines, and distribution lines. This position is a hands-on assignment that will work side-by-side with the workforce to ensure knowledge transfer and the use of best practices in the electrical field.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

·       Provide individual mentoring and training for the electrical work force.

·       Review and update standard operating procedures and job task instructions.

·       Recommend and assist in the development of action plans to continuously improve the electrical repair process and reliability.

·       Continually reinforce best safety practices and company policy and ensure that the electrical work force knows the hazards associated with working around electrical systems. 

·       Advance the skills and ability of the electrical work force by instructing and demonstrating the ability to remove, repair, replace, test, analyze, diagnose, advance troubleshoot and optimize:

o   Construction, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and replacement of electrical distribution equipment including capacitor banks, distribution transformers, insulators and fuses, towers and poles, overhead and underground distribution and transmission cable/lines.  

o   Repair defective power cables and auxiliary equipment for power lines.

o   Measure voltage using electronic test equipment.

o   Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair and replace electrical substation equipment including transformers, Ground relays, Current Transformers (CT’s), Neutral Ground Resistors (NGR) and Potential Transformers (PT’s)

o   Measure and monitor shovel box ground voltage.

o   Assembly and Erection of Portable Substation

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

·       Ability to climb (ascend and descend) wood poles, ladders and towers.

·       Ability to operate bucket truck to prepare the pole to install wire and pull wire through by hand or with the use of a winch.

·       Ability to read, understand and apply information from technical manuals, drawings, prints, and schematics for installation, troubleshooting and repair.  

·       Ability to lead and complete job assignments in a timely manner.

·       Strong leadership skills.

·       Ability to teach and mentor.

·       Mentor and/or train other electrical department employees.

·       Ability to be trained and to operate equipment including but not limited to scissor lift, man-lifts, forklift, boom trucks, and overhead cranes.

·       Applicant must have effective written, visual, electronic, and verbal communication skills.

·       Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety related instructions and procedures given in English. 

·       Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

·       Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentages and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

·       Ability to manage time effectively and set priorities.

·       Ability to manage multiple tasks.

·       The physical requirements of the position are considered Heavy Work: Exerting up to 80 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

·       The ability to work in conditions of extreme heat, extreme cold, vibration, chemicals including but not limited to airborne and/or skin exposure, high noise levels, confined spaces, and heights.

·       Ability to wear respirator in conditions of fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation.

·       Ability to ascend or descend ladders, scaffolding, stairs, ramps, and the like with agility.

·       Availability to work any shift, including weekends and holidays (shifts may be rotating). Mine Operations are 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.

·       Provide and maintain the minimum personal tools as described by the department tool list or be able to obtain them within 90 days of hire.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

      5 years related experience as an Industrial Lineman and certification as a Journeymen Lineman through a state approved apprenticeship program (or)

·       7 years related experience as an Industrial Lineman and associates degree or Trade School Certification in a related field.

·       Must have high school diploma or GED.

·       English language fluency.

·       Industrial power transformer certification

·       MSHA certification a plus.
