Job description
The Principal Engineer, Actuation will specialize in the development, sizing and specification of different actuation systems. Work activities will include integration of constituent actuator elements such as electric motors, gear trains, ball screws, lead screws, position sensors, power management, control circuitry and communications.
Major Responsibilities:
- Design and develop mechanical systems and components involving actuation mechanisms and gear systems
- Create detailed technical drawings, specifications, and prototypes for new gear and actuation designs
- Plan and execute tests to validate design performance
- Work closely with cross-functional teams including electrical engineers, control engineers, and project managers to integrate actuation and gear systems into larger mechanical assemblies
- Provide technical support and documentation for production, assembly, and maintenance teams
- Deconstruct higher level tasks into discrete lower-level work packages and tasks
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- Experience with both rotary and linear actuators
- Minimum of 15 years of experience in mechanical engineering with a focus on actuation systems
- Proficient in Engineering processes
Minimum Competencies:
- Proven design and manufacturing knowledge in machined parts, injection molded parts, gear hobbling, broaching, sheet metal fabrication, BLDC motors, wire harnesses/flex harnesses and related components, corrosion resistant steels and aluminum alloys
- Proficiency in 3D modeling using CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks)
- In-depth knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, materials, and GD&T.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to identify and solve design problems, especially related to tolerances, materials, and manufacturing processes
- Precision and attention to detail are critical to producing accurate and error-free design documentation
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiar with AS9100 practices
- Experience in a Manufacturing or Manufacturing Engineering environment
Preferred Competencies:
- Experience with feedback control systems, including sizing, testing and integration, design-for-manufacturing, kinematic and dynamic simulation and analysis
- Experience using MATLAB and Simulink
Operational Details / Work Environment:
- Work activities may be performed at Company facilities or at the facilities of the company’s customers
- Work will be performed both in an office environment and in a laboratory environment.
- Travel to customer site may be required
- PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) may be required in some workspaces

Pay: $168,796.00 - $193,489.00 per year
