ASC tech is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of all areas of the Ambulatory Surgery Center which includes operating rooms, pre-op area, PACU, ECF areas, storage areas and shipping/receiving. All areas should be kept clean and within the standards required for patient care.
Assist surgical techs in instrument cleaning, sterilization, storage as well as stock surgical supplies. Assist RN’s in the delivery of safe, effective and quality patient-centered care of patients in the preoperative setting for all patient populations; provide age-specific, culturally competent, ethical care within legal standards of practice.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Patient Care

Check in patients to pre-operative area.
- Instruct on changing clothes appropriately.
- Takes temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs. Able to detect deviations from normal and report to RN.
- Apply appropriate SCD sleeves and/or warming blanket as indicated.
- Act as an advocate for the patient.
- Provide consistent, age-specific, culturally competent, and ethical care.
- Maintain privacy, dignity and confidentiality of the patient and health information.
- Maintains awareness of comfort and safety needs of patient.
Instrument Care
- Decontaminate, disinfect, clean, wrap/package and sterilize and store surgical instruments according to established protocol.
- Receive, inventory and restock materials used for surgical services.
- Monitor, interpret, and document results of physical, chemical and biological indicators for all types of sterilizers used in the sterile processing areas. Report any abnormalities immediately.
- Distribute medical and surgical supplies from sterile processing areas to other areas within the facility or health care organization as needed.
- Assist with improving the quality of sterile processing services.
- Adhere to standard precautions including the use of personal protective equipment.
- Follow safety procedures and manufacturer’s instructions when handling cleaning solutions, supplies and equipment.
- Operate equipment used in the sterile processing areas safely and according to the manufacturer’s instructions for use.
Perioperative area

Maintaining cleanliness and preparation of the perioperative areas per AORN standards
- maintenance cleaning/daily mopping of pre-op area and PACU
- stocking of medical supplies, nutritional supplies, medications
- assist in laundry as needed
- Clean and disinfect assigned areas including furnishings and equipment.
- Assist in preparing rooms (pre-op, OR, PACU, ECF), sterile instruments, equipment, and supplies for surgery.
- Turn-over/prepare pre-operative area in a timely manner for arriving patients
- Assist in turn-over cleaning in the OR
- Assist in terminal/end of the day cleaning of the OR.
- Assist in paperwork preparation/scanning as instructed
- Distribute/stock laundry to appropriate areas.
- Empty trash and waste and transport to disposal areas following facility specific protocols.
- Follow established protocols to maintain a clean, safe environment for patients, personnel, and visitors.
- Follow established protocols for cleaning and disinfecting all areas of perioperative services as well as sterile processing areas (eg, decontamination rooms, clean workrooms, clean/sterile storage rooms, hallways, utility rooms).
- Follow established protocols for routine, between-case, enhanced environmental cleaning, and terminal cleaning of the ORs and procedure rooms.
- Follow established protocols for preparing, using, and disposing of cleaning chemicals.
- Follow established protocols for routine, enhanced environmental cleaning, and terminal cleaning of the sterile processing areas.
Emergency Care
- Respond to life saving situations based upon policies, procedures and protocol.
- Aware of where emergency cart is located.
- Aware of where AED is located and how to use it.
Additional
- Understand the importance of cost containment.
- Understand the importance of and participate in risk management activities.
- Participate in quality review and performance improvement projects.
- Participate in performance appraisal process.
- Understand and comply with all HIPPA, OSHA and biohazard rules, standards, regulations and policies.

Education, Licensure and Experience Requirements:
- High school diploma
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Preferred
- Associates or Bachelor’s degree
- One year experience with patient care and/or surgical instrumentation processing
- Certified or registered central service certification
