The Job

The Tower Technician performs construction, inspection, general repair and maintenance on communication towers and associated high frequency antennas/subsystems. This position requires significant travel and deployment of up to 1 month at a time. Responsibilities include construction, antenna and lighting installation and repairs, tower repair and maintenance.

What You Will Do – Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor
  • Perform maintenance or repair work on existing tower equipment, using hand or power tools.
  • Operate survey equipment (Compass, Alignment Tool etc...).
  • Ability to run test equipment (Sweeps, PIM, Fiber, Microwave, etc.)
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures
  • Maintain safety procedures and inspect climbing gear and tools before use.
  • Run appropriate power, ground, or coaxial cables
  • Upgrade, Install, or replace antennas/radio's, pipes, and modify tower booms.
  • Stack cell phone towers.
  • Replace angle iron and structural supports for cell phone towers
  • Learn safety procedures, rules & language quickly
  • Travel throughout the U.S. on a regular basis to evaluate and assess the condition of cell phone towers.
  • Climb cell phone towers 100 ft and up using climbing gear, harness, and safety gear while following strict safety procedures and guidelines implemented by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
  • Be available for evening, weekends, and rotational assignments; accepting on-call responsibilities
  • Ability to work outside and withstand varied inclement weather conditions
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
  • Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone

What You’ll Need – Qualifications & Requirements

  • H.S. Diploma/GED and 2 years tower construction background. Must possess ability to read blueprints, details and specifications, knowledge of Test Equipment, Sweep, PIM & Fiber, and Certification in each, and knowledge of standard knots.
  • NWSA/TTT-1 Certification, both written and practical.
  • English Language Fluency Required.
  • Must possess the physical ability to climb to heights of up to 500 feet.
  • Domestic Travel 90% of the time and able to operate a company vehicle at the CMV level.
  • Health Services\Driver's License - MDOT Medical Physical Req
  • Demonstrate advanced ability to safely climb, position and confidently work at heights
  • Demonstrate an ability to effectively preform the various skills utilized in the telecommunication industry
  • Demonstrate an ability of understanding and utilizing safe work practices, both on the job and while driving a company vehicle
  • Demonstrate dependability in attendance and performance of advanced industry skills
  • Demonstrate ability to provide direction to less experienced team members
  • Previous experience safely operating machinery/equipment preferred
  • Industry certifications required include (but are not limited to) Competent Climber & Rescuer, OSHA 10HR, Rigging, Signal training, Lift training, RF, Capstan Hoist, CPR/First Aid
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the job which include (but are not limited to) climbing, walking, standing, bending, lifting, pulling, reaching and using hands/fingers for repetitive motion
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to be an approved Company driver

Successful candidates will be required to submit to criminal background check and are subject to drug screenings.
