The Cross Commodity Buyer is responsible for sourcing, procuring, and managing the supply of a diverse range of components across electrical, mechanical, and fabricated/machined parts categories within the medical and life sciences industry. This role requires a broad knowledge base and the ability to work with suppliers to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of high-quality parts from prototype through production.
Key Responsibilities:
- Implement sourcing processes and improvement initiatives based on global and regional category management strategies.
- Develop and maintain a robust supplier base across multiple commodities, including:
- Electrical: PCBAs, cables, switches, displays, power supplies, lasers, sensors, wire harnesses
- Mechanical: gantries, robots, actuators, linear motion, bearings, pneumatics, gears
- Fabricated/Machined: custom machined components, frames, weldments, sheet metal, castings, moldings
- Conduct supplier evaluations, negotiations, and performance management to maximize company benefits.
- Support R&D and new product design by sourcing components for initial prototype builds.
- Drive cost reduction through value engineering, alternative sourcing, and process improvements.
- Manage Supplier Manufacturing Service Agreements and Supplier Quality Management.
- Oversee part qualifications across commodities to ensure conformity and process margin.
- Mentor and train junior buyers as needed.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Procurement, Business, or Engineering
- 7 years of experience in procurement engineering or commodity management in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
- Broad knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and fabricated/machined parts and their manufacturing processes
- Strong understanding of product development life cycles and supply chain methodologies
- Excellent negotiation and communication skills
- Proficiency in cost analysis, benchmarking, and strategic sourcing
- Experience with regulatory programs such as ISO 9001 and ISO 13485
- Working knowledge of P2P (procure-to-pay) principles and practices
- Ability to work with design teams on DFM/DFC/DFQ
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office suite and MRP systems

Additional Information
- APICS CPIM Certification and lean manufacturing experience preferred
- May require up to 15% travel

This cross-commodity role combines the expertise traditionally split between electrical, mechanical, and fabricated/machined parts buyers, requiring a versatile professional with a broad skill set and the ability to manage complex supply chains across multiple categories.
This position is a regular fulltime position in the San Diego area. Salary range of $87,000-$105,000 plus benefits, PTO etc.
