Asher Community Health Center is seeking a part-time medical assistant to work in Mitchell, Oregon. This position works with patients of all ages in a primary care setting 3 days a week.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Medical Assistant works between the Reception Desk and the treatment room. In this role, they bridge the Provider: Reception relationship, and are a critical element in maintaining smooth patient flow. They are expected to support both Reception and the Provider as needed, and Reception and the Provider are expected to likewise support them as needed.
EXAMPLES OF PRINCIPAL DUTIES:
(Duties assigned to this classification include, but are not limited to, the following examples.)
1. Greet patients and answers telephone and directs calls in a courteous and professional manner
2. Address questions within their range of competence; refers questions outside their range of competence appropriately to clinic providers.
3. Gathers and enters patient information into the patient’s EMR.
4. Prepare patients for provider visits, assist provider with procedures and exams. Administer treatments as necessary.
5. Perform clinical procedures - phlebotomy, UA’s, strep tests, blood glucose testing, x-rays, sets up sterile trays for procedures, etc.
6. Maintain equipment, clean, disinfect and sterilize instruments, and keeps medical supplies stocked, up to date, and ordered.
7. Perform administrative duties - immunization enrollment, records and reports. Calls in meds/refills to pharmacies, fills out lab/pathology requisitions, makes patient calls to relay information from provider to patient and screens calls from patients to provider. Fills out prescriptions for faxing and documents in patient medical record.
8. Enter patient and scheduling information into the current medical management system in an efficient and effective manner.
9. Work closely with the Referral Coordinator to place calls to offices to which patients have been referred; schedule appointments as needed; and ensure that there is prior insurance pre-authorization when needed.
10. Keep abreast of all new regulations and changes affecting the job including computer updates, safe practice, OSHA regulations, and grant requirements.
11. Function as a member of a team, including but not limited to:
a. Is available to work for another MA or front office (if trained) for days off and vacations.
b. Participates in quality assurance activities and client care audits.
c. Performs special assignments as requested by provider with efficiency and cooperation.
d. Supports Reception, as possible, to maintain smooth patient flow.
e. Proactively seeks help from Reception and the Provider as needed to maintain smooth patient flow.
12. In addition to the above, performs the duties of the Laboratory Technician
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED OF THIS POSITION
Knowledge of: Medical terminology, OSHA regulations, and HIPPA regulations/patient confidentiality.
Skills: Must exhibit professionalism, multi-tasking abilities and good phone skills. Medical terminology, good communication and organizational skills are necessary. Must also exhibit safe MA practices and the ability to take clinical direction from the provider.
Abilities: Prioritize responsibilities. Learn new skills quickly and be able to self-motivate. Work in a busy location and work well under pressure. Able to plan quickly as the day unfolds, being able to reestablish priorities as the day changes. Possess good customer service face to face, over the phone, working with angry clients, and able to create a warm atmosphere for clients and team members. Work with clients of diverse backgrounds and work as a team member.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED. Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience in a medical office or who have worked or trained as a C.N.A or MA. At time of employment, must possess a valid Oregon driver’s license. Must be qualified in Basic Life Support.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS OF THIS POSITION
This position will be overseen by the clinical supervisor.
GUIDELINES
Work is performed within established policies and procedures; protocols and guidelines, and personnel rules; federal and state health laws and statutes and rules of private health care providers such as insurance companies and hospitals must be consulted and applied.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is primarily performed in an office environment; may involve bending, hearing voice conversations, reading fine print, keyboarding, kneeling, lifting up to 50 pounds, pulling, pushing, reaching, sitting, standing and walking. Employee shares common exposure to communicable disease. May need to drive to satellite clinics and/or community immunization clinics.
