JOB TITLE: Interim Instructional Assistant
JOB STATUS: Temporary Position until 6/6/25
LOCATION: Claxton Elementary School

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Ten month position to work closely with the teacher to provide support for the teacher in the instruction of students.  A wide variety of tasks are performed to support the teacher in the teaching-learning process for students.  The work is performed under the supervision of the teacher and/or principal.  
 

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school and a two or four year college degree or 48 semester hours of college credit from an accredited institution of higher education. 

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Works with the teacher to support the instructional plan of the teacher. Gives group instruction as directed by the teacher and works with small groups of students to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher. Gives individualized instruction to pupils as directed by the teacher. 

  2. Maintains confidentiality in matters pertaining to the student(s) and the class.

  3. Serves in place of the teacher when requested by the administration.

  4. Prepares instructional materials and employs them with student groups. Acquires materials appropriate for use with specific student groups; plans material use to supplement lesson plans; develops lesson plans in conjunction with teacher; and determines the manner in which lesson plans and supplemental materials will be employed in classrooms. Distributes and collects instructional materials and organizes materials at the end of the day/period.

  5. Conducts clerical tasks. The characteristics of clerical support will be defined for a particular teaching assistant position at a specific school.

  6. Executes student behavioral management. The characteristics of student behavioral management support  will be defined for a particular teaching assistant position at a specific school. 

  7. Provides health management services and enters data in student health records. The characteristics of health management services to be provided will be defined for a particular teaching assistant at a specific school.

  8. Serves as proctor during testing.

  9. Attends workshops as requested by the administration.

  10. Scores students’ papers as instructed by the teacher.

  11. Checks and reports attendance.

  12. Files data according to regulatory requirements.

  13. Supervises students in the classroom, on the playground, on field trips and other locations to maintain safety and security at all times. 

  14. Teaches citizenship, social skills and respect for others.

  15. Reconciles minor student conflicts and disciplines misbehavior through the approved school and classroom teacher methods and policies. Reports discipline problems to the teacher or administration.

  16. Successfully completes the requirements to obtain a North Carolina School Bus Driver’s License, keeps the license current, and drives a school bus when requested on a substitute or a permanent basis. Also understands and follows the attached Bus Driver Job Description. 
     

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Arranges, moves and stacks classroom furnishings and equipment as necessary.

Prepares visual aids.

Duplicates materials.
 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Working knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children.

Working knowledge of the core subjects at the grade level to which employment assignment is made.

Knowledge of established laws, rules and regulations of Asheville City Schools and Title I program.

Knowledge of expected behavior of children, that is, basic characteristics of ages and developmental stages.

Skills necessary to make learning aids, which will strengthen lesson plans.

Ability to comprehend the purpose of teacher designed strategies to fulfill the instructional objectives.

Ability to impart information on the child’s level of comprehension.

Ability to impartially and consistently apply proper methods of recognition, reward and punishment.

Ability to independently solve most minor problems.

Craft skills to assist students with activities, assemble materials and put up bulletin board displays. 

Coordinating skills to schedule lesson plans, organize materials for use with lesson plans, organize and maintain student records, develop schedules for remediation, organize physical fitness records; and track number of students assigned to I.S.S. throughout the year.

Administrative skills to discipline students based on school.

Analytical skills to assist teacher in student evaluations. 

Communication skills to assist students in classrooms.

Leadership skills to motivate students toward positive behavior and to help them set realistic goals. 

Planning skills to implement instructional presentation of lesson plans. 

Manual skills for general housekeeping in classroom.

Planning skills to plan daily activities with teacher.

Mathematical skills to assist students with assignments. 

Software/word processing skills to assist students in computer lab and with classroom computer programs.

Ability to follow minimally detailed written and oral instructions without constant supervision.
 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements:  Must be physically able to sit, stand, kneel and walk for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift boxes up to 20 pounds.  Physical demand requirements are for Medium Work.

Data Conception:  Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

Interpersonal Communication:  Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information.  Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to subordinates or assistants.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read simple forms.  Requires the ability to prepare time sheets and supply requisitions using prescribed format.

Intelligence:  Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations.

Verbal Aptitude:  Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.  Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.

Numerical Aptitude:  Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas, to add, subtract, divide and multiply.

Form/Spatial Aptitude:  Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

Motor Coordination:  Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using computers and other technology.

Manual Dexterity:    Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination:  Requires the ability to differentiate between colors or shades of color.

Interpersonal Temperament:  Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.  Must be adaptable to performing under average levels of stress.
