Financial Controller

Asheville Mica Company is seeking a highly skilled Financial Controller with experience in cost accounting and ERP automation.

Newport News, VA

Established in 1899, Asheville Mica Company is a leading manufacturer and importer of mica materials and components serving various industries. With a focus on North America, we are expanding to meet the demands of the evolving EV, Hybrid, and Battery Energy Storage markets. Our recent expansion includes a new facility to accommodate our growth.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a hands-on Financial Controller with a strong understanding of cost accounting. This role will oversee all financial operations, product costing and will supervise back-office functions, including human resources and payroll.

This role requires expertise in financial reporting, budgeting, and cost analysis. The ideal candidate with embrace leveraging software to automate processes and find efficiencies.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Accounting, Reporting and Compliance:

· Perform monthly close and produce financial reports and statements.

· Conduct budgeting, forecasting and analysis activities and reporting.

· Provide periodic and ad-hoc reports to managers and directors.

· Liaise with external partner firms to complete yearly audits and tax returns.

· Prepare and submit local real estate and business tax returns.

Cost Accounting & Analysis:

· Develop and maintain cost accounting systems for manufacturing and resale products within NetSuite.

· Analyze manufacturing costs, standard costs, and overhead allocations to improve cost transparency and control.

· Ensure accurate inventory valuation.

ERP System Optimization & Automation:

· Automate financial closing, reporting and processes using Netsuite and other systems.

· Develop dashboards and reporting tools to improve the visibility of key metrics.

· Collaborate with other departments to design processes that support financial and costing data integrity.

Staff Leadership & Development:

· Lead and develop accounting staff.

· Collaborate with other departments on company initiatives.

· Ensure department efficiency and continuous improvement.

· Design and implement internal controls.

Intercompany & Inventory Cost Management:

· Oversee intercompany transactions, ensuring accurate cost allocation across subsidiaries.

· Track landed costs for imported items including freight, duties, and tariffs.

· Design and utilize inventory cost tracking and controls.

Financial Strategy & Decision Support:

· Partner with leadership and external advisors to continuously improve financial and tax strategies.

· Provide actionable insights on cost savings and revenue enhancement opportunities.

· Collaborate with other teams to align financial goals with business objectives.

· Strategic cash management and forecasting.

Qualifications:

Education:

· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.

· CPA or CMA certification preferred.

Experience:

· Minimum of 5 years of experience as a financial controller, with a strong understanding of cost accounting principles and financial reporting.

· Experience in a manufacturing or import/export environment is required.

· Strong leadership experience with a track record of managing accounting teams.

Technical Skills:

· Expertise in financial accounting and reporting.

· Proficiency in utilizing ERP software, preferably NetSuite.

· Expertise in Microsoft applications, Adobe, and financial modeling tools.

· Knowledge of inventory management systems, intercompany accounting, and landed cost calculations.

· Experience with designing and implementing best practices and processes.

· Accuracy, consistency and timeliness in documentation and reporting.

· Excellent communication, management, leadership, and organization skills.

· Design and implementation of financial processes and ERP automations and optimization.

· A strong understanding of lean principles.

· Knowledge of data retention requirements and security regulations.

· Strategic cash management and forecasting.
