What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shift Foreman position at Ashland LLC?

Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Shift Foreman to join our Ashland (ISP Technologies) business at our Texas City, TX location. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the Production function. This position will report to the Continuous Process Operations Manager.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Work with Operations, Managers, and other members of the Production department to safely execute annual goals and objectives for each production area.
  • Personally, recognize, reward, and provide feedback for successful efforts of employees to increase productivity, reduce costs and improve work processes, then report via appropriate channels.
  • Assess, and if needed, correct employee performance focusing on safety, environmental, quality and production initiatives and/or shortfalls in conjunction with the Plant Rules.
  • Provide consistent feedback and coaching to operations employees to develop skills and accountability.
  • Delegate tasks to operations employees, then follow up to ensure completion.
  • Ensure production units manufacture product meeting internal and external customer specifications in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Utilize effective leadership over operations employees to maximize employee productivity and contribution from each process area.
  • Document substandard performance, provide appropriate coaching/counseling, then formally document poor performance and counseling given.
  • Supervise and inspect after-hours work by other work groups.
  • Take necessary steps to ensure production units are operated with appropriate/qualified manpower at all times.
  • Keep Union and Management personnel working together in a cohesive manner to ensure those differences are worked out amicably.
  • Ensure implementation and administration of all policies and procedures designed for the Production Department.
  • Participate in Safety, Quality and Environmental initiatives to comply with State/Federal regulations and strive to improve existing Company programs.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the safe, efficient, and effective functioning of the production department.

Production Supervisor Responsibilities – Rotating Shift Schedule

  • Cover entire facility (plant running safely and efficiently producing on-spec products).
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts with operators and engineers in all production units.
  • Inventory control.
  • Daily review of Quality/Lab data.
  • Collect log sheets and paperwork for morning report.
  • Write complete, daily events in Production Supervisor’s log.
  • Lead production meetings with each area to assess unit performance and develop key daily priorities.
  • Follow-up on guideline changes ensuring understanding and compliance with said changes.
  • Spill response for hazardous chemicals – special environmental sample schedule.
  • Ensure cGMP compliance and ISO compliance.
  • Complete cGMP document reviews to ensure compliance and accuracy.
  • Serve as an Incident Commander for the Emergency Response Team.
  • Participate in Incident Investigations.
  • Enforce compliance with all Plant Rules.
  • Environmental Compliance (water samples, deep wells operation, spill/releases notifications to proper authorities).
  • Write Work Orders and coordinate work with the Maintenance department.
  • Review maintenance tasks to issue appropriate permits ensuring safe work.
  • Equipment Inspection.
  • Supervise Maintenance called out/scheduled out on nights and weekends.
  • Callout Warehouse for material movements.
  • Administer disciplinary action and documentation for Personnel records.
  • Perform Drug/Alcohol testing to employees when necessary.
  • Manual record of hourly time to ensure payroll accuracy and attendance records.
  • Schedule overtime and manage vacation requests.
  • Policy Implementation.
  • Coordinate inter-department transfers.

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:

  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in chemical plant manufacturing.
  • Well-versed in chemical process manufacturing, plant safety rules and regulations, Process Safety Management (PSM), current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGPM), environmental compliance standards, site Quality processes, and budgetary cost control.
  • Valid driver’s license required to operate Company vehicle on Company business.
  • Ability to lead and manage others effectively.
  • Candidate must also have the ability to 1) identify critical issues and formulate action plans with all levels of management, including Corporate, 2) develop and foster a positive work environment at all levels, and 3) resolve conflicts through problem resolution skills.
  • Ability to respond appropriately during site emergencies as directed by the Site Emergency Manager.
  • Capable of evacuating the manufacturing process areas in a timely manner should an emergency arise.
  • Ability to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment if required to work or visit within the manufacturing process area. This may include hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel-toed shoes, or other equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being performed.
  • Ability to walk distances, climb stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling and/or reaching depending on the work activity required. Lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to identify quality improvement opportunities and formulate action plans for implementation. This requires exceptional work planning and problem-solving skills.
  • Work is performed in an office/plant environment with frequent trips to the operating units to assess equipment or processes, perform inspections and/or collect data.

The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:

  • Associate Degree in Process Chemical Technology Operations or related discipline.
  • Prior experience in a Union environment.
  • Prior confined space entry knowledge.
  • Training required to perform the job properly may require this position to travel within Texas and around the United States of America.

Must be authorized to work in the US.
