Job Description: Dean of Students
Ashley River Classical Academy (ARCA) is hiring its founding staff members to provide support to its teachers, students, and families. Ashley River Classical Academy is a tuition-free, public, classical charter school. It is part of the nationwide Hillsdale College network of classical charter schools united by curriculum and purpose. Ashley River Classical Academy will initially open K-5 and grow to K-12 by adding one grade level each year. Ashley River Classical Academy is now accepting applications for the Dean of Students.
Each faculty member is a professional who is esteemed and supported by a faculty of colleagues striving for excellence. The faculty is entrusted with practical implementation of the mission of ARCA: Our mission is to train the minds and hearts of our students through a content-rich classical education in the liberal arts and sciences, with a focus on fostering moral character and civic virtue.
The Dean of Students is a member of the school leadership team who works closely with the Head of School to develop a positive and joyful school culture that is well-disciplined, structured, and conducive to learning.
Primary duties and responsibilities include:
- Developing and maintaining a system of schoolwide procedures to create an orderly, safe environment for all students
- Working closely with teachers, parents, and students to implement the school’s systems of discipline and rewards
- Providing guidance and coaching to teachers on aspects of classroom management
- Assisting in the recruitment and selection of faculty members
- Developing schoolwide schedules to ensure adequate supervision at lunch, recess, assemblies, and other events
- Planning and delivering high-quality professional development opportunities for faculty
- Consistently demonstrating the school’s Virtues: Prudence, Justice, Temperance, Courage, Responsibility, Compassion, and Perseverance
- Assisting the Head of School with other responsibilities as needed
Qualities and characteristics of a successful Dean of Students:
- Bachelors or above in any subject area; Masters or PhD preferred
- Familiarity with best practices in school management and discipline
- Significant teaching experience; experience with classical education is preferred
- Leadership: The ability to inspire others through both word and example
- High moral character
- Thoughtfulness and a love of learning
