GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under the general supervision of the Unit Manager and/or Clinical Supervisor, the Health Care Technician (State Testing Nurse Aide [STNA]) assists the nursing staff in providing direct care to residents.

QUALIFICATIONS: An example of acceptable qualifications:

Completion of secondary education or equivalent (high school diploma or GED); must pass the state approved written and clinical skills test; related experience in a nursing facility; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An individual who poses a direct threat to the health and safety of himself/herself or others in the workplace will be deemed not qualified for this position.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Possess a State Tested Nursing Assistant certification that is active and in good standing with the Ohio Nurse Aide Registry as maintained by the Ohio Department of Health.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED: The following are examples only and are not intended to be all inclusive:

Computer, computer software (e.g., Microsoft Office, Outlook, Point Click Care, and other applicable computer software), printer, copy machine, calculator, fax machine, other standard business office equipment, lifts, gurneys, weight scales, shower equipment, gait belt.

INHERENTLY HAZARDOUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORKING CONDITIONS:

Employee has exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment (e.g., toner, correction fluid, etc.); may have contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons; may have contact with blood, bodily tissues, and fluids; works second and third shift; this is considered medium work and the employee must demonstrate the ability to perform the physical demands required of the position in accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor’s physical demands strength ratings.

In cases of emergency, unpredictable situations, and/or department needs, may be required to lift, push, pull, and/or carry objects heavier than D.O.L. strength ratings recommend.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND WORKER CHARACTERISTICS:

JOB DUTIES in order of importance

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION: For purposes of 42 USC 12101:

60% (1) Provides primary support to residents (e.g., assists with ambulation, standing, and range of motion; bathes, dresses, and provides hygienic care; shampoos, combs, and brushes hair; trims fingernails; shaves residents; applies lotions and creams and reports skin disorders to nursing personnel; observes residents’ progress and/or changes and documents observations and reports to supervisor; makes scheduled rounds to residents; utilizes lift procedures to place residents into and out of wheelchairs; assists with bed pans and urinals, etc.).

30% (2) Provides support services to residents (e.g., assists with controlling behavior; provides activities of daily living restorative programs and documents services provided; talks with residents to provide stimulation and assess their needs; changes wet and soiled linens; transports residents to and from dining room and/or other nursing home facilities; serves food trays and snacks, delivers fresh water and feeds residents; takes vital signs and assists nurses with basic nursing duties; takes urine samples; empties drainage bags; assists with cleaning of residents’ rooms and work units; empties trash, etc.).

5% (3) May assist the dining room serving meals, as needed.

(4) Attends meetings and serves on committees, as directed; attends training and seminars, as directed.

(5) Maintains required licensure or certification, if any.

(6) Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable safety standards that pertain to essential functions.

(7) Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

5% (1) Performs other related duties as necessary.

(2) Required to work second and third shift.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE CHARACTERISTICS: (*indicates developed after employment)

Knowledge of: office practices and procedures; *Organizational/department goals and objectives; *Organizational/department policies and procedures; *workplace safety practices and procedures; *personnel rules and regulations; community resources and services; public relations; English grammar and spelling; Medicare and Medicaid laws, rules, regulations; personal hygiene; gerontology; proper lifting and transfer techniques.

Skill in: word processing; computer operation; use of modern office equipment; patient care.

Ability to: carry out instructions in written, oral, picture, or schedule form; deal with problems involving several variables within familiar context; define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; exercise independent judgment and discretion; understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, or regulations to specific situations; read, copy, and record figures accurately; add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers; copy records precisely without error; complete routine forms; prepare routine correspondence; compile and prepare reports; respond to routine inquiries from public and/or officials; communicate effectively; understand a variety of written and/or verbal communications; maintain records according to established procedures; handle sensitive inquiries from and contacts with officials and general public; develop and maintain effective working relationships; travel to and gain access to work site; lift, position, and move individuals according to established procedures; operate wheelchair restraints.
