Description: The Assistant Principal assists the building principal in the direction and supervision of educational and safety procedures. They ensure growth and maintenance of a cooperative learning environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensure safety of students, taking all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Attend board of education meetings and report on matters pertinent to the school.
- Assist in the implementation and monitoring of all board policies and regulations.
- Prepare all reports and maintain such records as required by school law, regulation or request of the superintendent or principal.
- Administer the assigned school in the principal’s absence.
- Attend special events, functions, and athletic events as they relate to the building assignment in conjunction with the principal.
- Assist in the supervision of extracurricular activities as required.
- Interact in a positive manner with staff, students, and parents.
- Assist in establishing and maintaining a positive public relations program by making contact with the public with tact and diplomacy.
- Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude, and conversation.
- Respond to and appropriately handle complaints of parents.
- Arrange conferences with parents, teachers, and students regarding grades/disciplinary procedures.
- Assist in appraising the performance of teachers through class visits and conferences for the purpose of improving instruction and assisting teachers with any problems.
- Assist the principal in reviewing teacher lesson plans.
- Assist in the supervision and evaluation of classroom teachers, classified staff, guidance counselors, school nurse, athletic director and any other staff deemed necessary.
- Maintain respect at all times for confidential information, e.g., evaluations, health problems, documentation for legal proceedings.
- Assist in coordinating the work of special teachers who are assigned to the school.
- Assist in the development of the master schedule.
- Assist in the coordination of custodial service at the school with the custodial supervisor.
- Assist in the supervision of the operations of the buildings, grounds, and other school property.
- Assist in the preparation and supervision of fire and tornado drills and other emergency preparedness programs.
- Report serious accidents, burglaries, and incidents of an unusual nature to the proper authorities as quickly as possible.
- Assist in the supervision of the health service program for the building along with the school nurse.
- Oversee bus loading and unloading.
- Monitor cafeteria during lunch.
- Monitor and patrol building hallways.
- Assist the building principal in the general administration of the school.
- Cooperate with juvenile court authorities and other law and social enforcement agencies.
- Counsel students regarding their academic, social, and personal problems in cooperation with guidance counselors.
- Enforce guidelines for proper student conduct, attire, and discipline.
- Monitor and be familiar with all student activities related to assigned building.
- Assist in planning and scheduling appropriate school events.
- Assist the principal in monitoring and resolving problems with student attendance.
- Assist in scheduling appropriate educational assemblies for the student population.
- Maintain up-to-date and accurate student records, e.g., discipline cases, attendance.
- Assist in the development of curriculum, as requested.
- Assist with IEP meetings as required.
- Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.
- Instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principals and democratic values.
- Interact with the principal and/or superintendent and present information as requested.
Knowledge
- Knowledge of Ohio School law
- Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
- Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.

Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university
- Valid State of Ohio Administrator’s certification/license
- Minimum three years of teaching/educational experience at the K-12 level.
- Such alternative(s) to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate.
