Afghan Youth Mentor

Classification: Full-time; exempt Job Site: Asian Association of Utah (155 S 300 W, SLC, UT)
Position Purpose
The Afghan Youth Mentor (required to be bilingual in English and one of the following languages: Dari, Pashto, and Urdu) is responsible for working with refugee and immigrant youth one on one as a mentor. As a mentor you will follow the outlined plan for each individual youth in identifying needs and creating a service plan to address those needs with a focus on academic needs and family needs. Programming includes carrying out academic assistance and other appropriate social/emotional programming. The staff will work closely with the supervisory staff to facilitate and run all parts of the program. Preference give to individuals with lived refugee experience
Schedule
Position start ASAP; 40 hours per week
M-F; 9:00 am to 5:30 pm with occasional nights and weekends
Responsibilities
- Mentoring a case load of 15-20 youth which includes assessing needs, establishing goals, and promoting prosocial involvement while preventing youth from initial/further antisocial behaviors.
- Document mentor and youth interactions and follow a specific case note format.
- Assist youth in accessing community resources and understanding community system in order to help the youth to progress to independence.
- Collaborate in completing program reporting
- Attend related community based meetings
- Completing other assigned tasks as needed
Other Considerations:
- lived experience as a refugee/immigrant from Afghanistan
- experience in working with diverse youth/youth involved in the court system
-bilingual individuals who speak Afghan specific language/English
- experience and/or degree/coursework in education/social work/criminal justice
- experience with refugees and diverse populations
- must have own transportation/valid driver's license for position – part of the position responsibilities is to assist in providing transportation (reimbursed per mile at federal rate); must have at least 2 years of licensed driving experience
- must pass background check
- must be authorized to work in the United States of America
Compensation
- $18-20/hr DOE
- Full health/medical benefits offered
